The night fell in a gentle whisper, puffing out all the candles of light with its silent breath. The dying embers left in the wake of the festivities were just enough to sustain the happiness and warmth in the two lovers.
"Finally, I have you all for myself," JaeHwan put his arms around Shin's waist and pulled him closer without warning. "Happy seventeenth birthday, my Sun."
Shin's heart fluttered. Maybe because he had a young heart, or that he hadn't seen many people in the world, but JaeHwan knew the exact ways to make Shin look up at him in awe, and then look away, blushing wildly.
Two hearts. Both broken and jagged, rough around the edges, yet, for some reason, perfect for each other. As if their broken pieces fit in each other like parts of a puzzle.
"I have a present for you." JaeHwan took his wrist and led him upstairs to his room, careful to not run on the stairs lest his parents should wake up. They were quite tired and although Shin had wished to see more of his Uncle in the evening, he could only come home by night. Kim DanTae was wrapped up in year end board meetings.
"Another one?" Shin asked.
"Yes uhm... this one is pretty special, you see. I didn't do this alone, but well..." JaeHwan let go of Shin's hand once he was inside his room. He locked the door and walked to his study, gesturing to Shin to follow him. "It's less of a present for you, more of a present for me, hah."
Shin followed JaeHwan inside his study, his brows dipping as he watched him rummage his drawers. JaeHwan pulled out a thin paper folder, and handed it over to Shin, with gleaming hope and expectation written all over his face.
Paper folders never made good gifts. Shin knew that. He had seen enough morning dramas to know that.
With his heart in his mouth, Shin opened the folder, pulling out a stapled set of glossy papers and papers for official works.
"Passport..." Shin frowned, searching up words he could read from the sea of English letters. He looked up, confused, but JaeHwan's hopeful face made him look down on the papers.
"This," Shin shuffled the papers, "Ka... f... Kaaleeforrni..."
"California," JaeHwan said, tapping his foot impatiently. "Look further."
