RBH had a charm twinning with its grandeur.
It was humongous, built on a wide property expanse, taking up god-knows how many acres of cultivable lands and converting them into two basketball courts, a baseball field, soccer ground, a gymnasium for the rowing team, a large skating rink, and an ice rink for figure skaters, although no one in the Senior Wing did figure skating. The school was divided into three wings— elementary, middle and high.
All those things aside, Shin loved the canteen the most. The pace of Shin's footsteps quickened as he got off the bus and trotted back to his residence. He lived in a rented rooftop room, a fairly nice place to live with huge outdoor space, which he lucked out in getting. The building owner was friends with Shin's grandfather.
On the hotter nights, he slept on the cot outside, under the stars. Food was the most difficult part, considering he didn't really know how to cook anything except rice and the side dishes his grandfather brought every weekend would get polished off by Thursdays. On Fridays and Saturdays, he often found himself staring at a meager bowl of instant ramen for dinner.
Except for those Fridays when his neighbor decided to be generous.
Kang SooMin. The pretty girl who worked in the bakery three buildings down from Shin's residence. She had long hair, and she often caught Shin drooling outside her bakery. Just like then.
"O-Oh Noona, hello..." Shin shuffled his feet and bounced on his heels, watching her wall out of the bakery. The windchime jingled when she pushed the door open. Shin clutched the straps of his backpack with both hands, and bowed his head, hoping that she would pat his head. But that never came.
"Why are you so late?" SooMin folded her arms over her chest. Judging from her flour stained apron, she was already back from her school and was probably making something. Shin could smell chocolate on her.
"I was touring the school, heh. It's huge, you know. Really, really huge."
"I know," SooMin chuckled, "but I've just seen its basketball court. Once or twice, maybe."
"Eh? You never told me you've been there."
"Not something I am particularly fond of talking about." SooMin turned around to walk back inside and Shin followed her like a lost puppy, completely disregarding the fact that he was still in his uniform. He hadn't stepped one foot inside when he heard SooMin's mother's shrill voice directed at him.
"Why are you here again?"
She had her thin arm resting on her waist and the other clutching a spatula. Before her lay a bowl of tempered chocolate and Shin found it hard to focus on the string of profanities he would soon be receiving.
