Chapter Twenty Two - The Before Party

The clock ticks and ticks and ticks, the end of the lesson and school was edging nearer. I couldn't help but feel slightly nervous of going to those running practices after school. I was just glad I had Issy and maybe Emily coming with me. Emily was just too lazy for words.

1 more minute. Thank God.

Brrriiiinnnnnnnnnggggggggg!

The class stood up hurriedly and rushed out of the classroom while poor Miss. Stuart was mid-sentence. I pushed myself up leisurely and stalked out of the classroom, swinging my school bag and P.E kit along with me as Miss. Stuart stammered a "Bye Miss. Grey,".

As I strolled down to the changing rooms, I started to feel slightly anxious as I thought of all the questions racing through my head.

What if I wasn't good enough?

What if everyone laughed at me because I was too slow?

What if Tyler was there?

Tyler used to go to these practices every week, I'd sometimes used to sit on the bleachers, watching and cheering if he won a race, which he normally did.

Finn had Football similarly and he would give me a ride home afterwards, so I was quite familiar with sitting on the bleachers with either book in my hand, or I'd be texting Issy and Emily in a group chat on BBM.

"Hey Payton," someone yelled from behind me. I turned around instantaneously and saw it was a petite pretty girl, called Lilly. I only knew her from Spanish and I also remembered she was on the schools sprinting team.

Lilly was a short, brunette, brown-eyed girl with very tan skin. Her tan skin didn't suit her very much, giving me the idea it was fake tan. She resembled an orange.

"Oh hi Lilly," I replied with a small smile.

"I heard you're starting run practices now, and you haven't even been to tryouts before. You must be good..." She said, while slightly narrowing her eyes at me.

"Well yeah, I kinda had a tryout because I was running and they saw me run a few laps. Who did you hear it from? And thanks, I hope I am good enough."

"Tyler," my eyed widened at his name, "he heard it from coach and he's been going around telling people that you won't last a day, and that he can't believe you're on the team. He also made a bet with some of the guys on the team saying you'll quit because you're too inactive."

What a dick.

My mouth opened, forming an 'O' when she said that, how could he be so horrible? I thought we agreed to be friends. I could feel a few tears threatening to leak out. I sniffed and replied with an "Oh."

"Are you okay?" She asked, but she didn't really sound that bothered as she chewed on her gum, she actually looked quite pleased. Nodding, we carried on marching to the changing rooms.

"So can you explain these practices then? Coach didn't tell me much." I probed trying to be nice, faintly smiling. She sighed while chewing loudly on her bubble gum.

"Well," Smack! That was the sound of her bubble gum popping as she expertly blew big bubbles, "You have to turn up to tryouts which are in the beginning of the year-" Smack! "-and if you're good enough, you'll get put in running practices. Nearly everyone gets put in running practice, it's why there's so many people." Smack! "Now see, while you're there every practice you'll get assessed by Coach and Mrs. Lockett-" Smack! "-if they think you're amazing then you get put in the team. It takes a lot of hard work to be put in the team, it took me two years." Smack! "But Mr. Tyler Hot Shot Davies, got in the team immediately he joined this school, because in his old school he came first in this competition and got some big award for his school." Smack! "I'm in the team along with Kayla, Hattie, Anthony, Brandon, Joe and Tyler." Smack!

I listened to her ramble on, but I listened carefully when she mentioned Tyler. He got an award? He never told me, now that I think of it, I didn't know much about him at a really apart from the fact he liked running. Oh my god.

Lilly was quite annoying with all that Smack!ing, like she should seriously throw that gum away now. I noticed she had the same piece of gum in Spanish which was second lesson.

Ew. That gum is probably as tasteless as my mum's lasagna.

I didn't bother replying to her as we had reached the changing rooms. Lilly had already stalked off chewing her gum as she walked over to Kayla.

I stared at everyone in wonder and admiration. The boys were flexing their muscles for the girls and the girls were stretching for the boys.

That made me burst into laughter causing people to stare at me in disgust.

The hallway to the changing rooms were packed with tons of fit people, it was filled with loud cheerful laughing and chatting.

I walked over to an open-mouthed Issy as she was staring at some hot guy flex his muscles.

"I didn't realize there would be this many people." She said. I nodded, then I realized that all these people were going to see me make a fool out of myself.

We started to walk into the changing rooms, and I began to get dressed into my P.E kit which was what everyone else was wearing apart from Lilly, (probably) Tyler, Kayla, Anthony, Joe, Brandon and Hattie. This was because they were apart of the real sprint team, entering school competitions and such wheras everyone else just showed up to practice running, and to hope they'd get picked to join the team.

There was no point hoping, there was only a couple places left and there were so many better runners.

"Oh yeah," Issy started as she remembered something, "Emily couldn't come because something came up." I shrugged.

"So, did you ask Coach whether you could join in the running or not?" I asked Issy expectantly. She inhaled then exhaled loudly causing me to stare at her bizarrely.

"Yeah I asked him just before you came, and he said just for today as he wasn't running practices alone but he did say if I was good enough, I could start coming to practices with you every week." She squealed excitedly.

"That's great, Issy. I'd love if you were right beside me through it all!" I said happily. I put on my Nike Roche Running shoes.

"Let's do this thing."
