CHAPTER FORTY!

"I couldn't breathe."

"Y/n."

Regulus was sprinting to her, across the great hall. She was sitting with Lily, and when Regulus came to her side, she excused herself and stood up.

Remus was staring at them as they walked out of the hall together. He just couldn't keep his eyes off them.

He couldn't stop thinking about Y/n, and it had become worse after that day at the library. That day where he had the most tense conversation he'd ever have with her.

And it wasn't only that. He also found a piece of paper that day, after Y/n left. It was curled up into a ball underneath the desk. He'd read it like a thousand times, to the point where he remembers it word for word.

My dearest, darling Moony, it read.

I have nothing to say to you other than sorry. And i know that isn't going to cut it.

I'm aware of the pain and sorrow i have caused you, and there is no bigger regret.

In your absence, i find myself missing you, very much.

I lost a boyfriend, i lost a best friend, i lost my love, i lost a part of myself. Perhaps the best part.

You were the best part of me.

And you might never want to come back to me, and i can't really blame you for that.

But Moony, i never thought i could long for someone this much.

I love you, and i wish i'd shown it better, i wish i'd done everything i could to prove it to you, because clearly i didn't do enough.

All the things you did for me, i'll cherish them forever. And i thank you for creating such happy memories for me.

I wish i could hear you laugh again. Laugh at something i said, laugh with me.

Oh the things i'd do just for a chat with you.

Love,
Y/n.

Remus was still in shock to this day. She was still thinking about him as much as he was thinking about her. And she was truly sorry.

So what was she doing with Regulus? Why would she waste her time with him if she loved Remus so much?

She had to choose between them, Remus knew that, and she seemed to be leaning towards Regulus, but that letter said otherwise.

"Y/n and my brother," Sirius sighed as he bit into his toast. "I'm getting pretty tired of seeing that everyday.

"Don't you think it's kind of our fault?" said James. Sirius and Peter's eyes grew wide as they looked at him. "I mean, she wouldn't be with Regulus all the time if we didn't ignore her like this."

"How is it our fault that she cheated?" Peter growled. "It was clear, she had his jumper in her bag, and they were meeting up every night."

"She didn't cheat," Remus said, and the three boys turned their heads towards him swiftly.

"What do you mean?" Sirius raised an eyebrow.

Remus took the paper from his backpack and flattened it out on the table before he pushed it towards them.

They began reading, and Remus could see the shock in their faces. But James had always been on her side. Remus knew that, he had always believed Y/n from the start. He always tried to convince Remus that Y/n never did and never would cheat on him.

"That's not what someone who's cheated would say, i don't think," said James, grinning at Remus. He knew James was satisified that Remus had finally believed what James had been telling him.

"No," Remus shook his head. "She explained to me too, in person."

Meanwhile, at the corridor outside the great hall, Regulus was panicking again. He was trembling, sweating, pacing around.

Y/n tried to place a hand on his arm, but she couldn't. He kept moving away.

"Regulus, i can't see you like this," she said, "Tell me what's wrong."

"It's the nightmare again," he began to tear up as he let his hands ruffle his hair. "The same one over and over and over again."

"You haven't told me what it was about," Y/n sighed, as she approached Regulus and touched his shoulders. "It's okay, Reg, you can tell me."

Y/n saw a tear drop falling from his eye.

"Regulus–"

"I'm scared, Y/n, i'm fucking terrified–"

"Regulus, listen–"

"I'm gonna die–"

"What? No you're not!" Y/n exclaimed, "Don't say that, please. You're going to be fine."

Regulus was still breathing heavily. Y/n saw his chest go up and down. She placed both of her hands on his both sides of his face.

"You're going to be fine. Fine, Regulus! Fine. Please don't say that, please," her voice was now weak. She too, was horrified now. Worried to death about Regulus. What kind of dreams had he been getting?

"Don't cry," Regulus whispered, "I can't stand seeing you cry."

"And i can't stand seeing you this way," she replied. "Tell me what you've been seeing."

He inhaled sharply. "Water," Regulus shuddered. "I was being pulled down, i couldn't breathe, i couldn't swim up, i was drowning."

Y/n's felt like her heart stopped, and she subtly gasped.

"You were there too," he said, "But sometimes, i'd be alone."

"Listen, Regulus, i'll do everything i can to protect you."

"I love you, Y/n."

Y/n sighed. "I love you too."

And he kissed her.

"Maybe she didn't cheat on you with him, but she definitely is with him now," said Peter, as the four boys watched Regulus and Y/n held each other tight.

Remus kept falling back to confusion. She was confusing him. She'd make him feel special, and then she'd shatter his heart.
