ADELAIDE

When Violet said others, I thought she meant the other people of her group or community or friends or even hoards of cute little puppies but not this.

We all take steps back, all of our eyes widened by the scene in front of us.

The rotten stench is such pungent that it might as well have burnt my nose hairs. I tightly hold Bea, burying her face in my stomach. I grit my teeth together, trying not to puke this very second.

"..and this Ken and this is Yokiko. This is my bff, Cassie and this is Dave." Violet introduces to all her friends.

I mean, dead friends.

A room in the first floor is filled with melting and deformed corpses, sitting on chairs, staring right into our souls. Some of them have no eyes- someone had grouched them off. All of them are wearing filthy, tattered clothes.

I take a gulp and watch Violet look at us expectantly. My gaze settles on Newt, whose chocolate eyes holds the same terror that maybe eyes hold too.

"Hi.... guys.." Thomas begins, unsurely, his whiskey eyes flickering everywhere but meet the corpses. "I uh-I'm Thomas. And these are my friends. Nice to meet you."

"Well, they used to be more lively a little while ago, but they're not immune.

Before they could go past the Gone, we had to kill them." She smiles at us, not a bit affected. "I'm the remaining one."

I really don't know what to say. The awkwardness and horror of this situation makes my skin crawl, a million of red flags flashing in my head.

"They are your family?" my boyfriend says, after clearing his throat.

"Yeah. That's my mom, my dad." She points them out. "That's my uncle and my brother and that's my sister." "

They seemed really nice." Winston stretches his lips wide, apparently, trying to smile.

"They are really nice." I don't miss the slight hostility in her voice regarding the tense usage.

Looks like, our host is yet to accept that her family is long dead.

"Do you have anything to eat?" I ask. "At least for this kid?" I motion to Bea.

"Why just for her?" her smile is back again. "I have food for everyone."

🏹🗡️🏹

We sit in another room, munching onto dried bacon strips. They are hard and quite tasteless, but I don't care, really. At least I'm having something to eat and water too.
