ADELAIDE

The sun is about to go down and we are walking comfortably with cool breeze caressing our skins and hair. The girls chatter away as they walk, their giggling resonating in the empty scorch

Not wanting to disturb their time together, I hang back. Pulling on the straps of my bag, I concentrate on my shoes, not wanting to eavesdrop on the girls.

"I'm sorry."

I jump back, scared. Fiona has magically appeared beside me, her pace same as mine. Her eyes are trained ahead.

"Wh-why are you sorry?"

She looks at me, a heartbroken expression breaking through the façade of hers before she masks it away again. "I knew that you have a boyfriend. I still kissed you."

"I kissed you first."

But I didn't want to kiss her. I thought I was kissing Newt.

I chuckle bitterly. "Now you understand why I always say that I am dying?"

"What?" she looks at me confused, her head tilted.

"That very moment, I had another of my episodes. I thought I was in a club, with my boyfriend and I kissed him. But-"

"It was me who you were kissing." Her voice is strained.

"Please, Fiona, believe me, I didn't want to lead you on."

She shakes her head. "I was stupid. I thought maybe you wanted to and I was more than happy. Now that I think of it, it's just a mistake. I was drunk, you had your episode. The kiss," she smiles and I can see the pain behind it, "its just a mistake."

You don't look like you want it to be one.

I broke another heart. I hurt another person.

My fingers subconsciously pinch my other arm. I'm such a monster.

"Adelaide, it was just a drunken mistake. It doesn't mean anything." She repeats, her voice now a little firm. Like she's trying the words to embedded in her head and mine too.

"Yeah, yeah it was."

I didn't cheat on Newt.

It was somewhat less awkward between us since then, the kiss between us dismissed as a combo of drinks and episodes' mistake. We again talked normally.

Harriet drifts back until the three of us are walking side by side.

"Looks like Fiona has finally found her gossip-buddy."

"Gossip buddy? I don't gossip!" I look at the both group B girls in confusion.

Both the girls laugh in unison. "Yeah, we can see right through you, you gossip-lover." Harriet smiles.

I raise my eyebrows, pouting. "Everyone loves somethin'. What do you love líder del parque?"

Harriet looks impressed with my hold on the language. "No sabia que sabias español."

"Cariño estoy llena de sorpresas."

Fiona claps her hand once, loudly. "Not all of us are Spanish okay?! Speak English or don't speak at all." Fiona says in annoyance.

Harriet and I share a look and burst into laughter, regardless Fiona's pout.

"Sorry we dragged you through the desert in a bag," she says once she stops laughing but I can definitely hear her smirk.

"Oh, no problem, it felt good to take some rest for a while, letting you all do the job." I joke.

She smiles, "I don't understand you at all. Sometimes you look like the one who will keep a grudge to your deathbed and sometimes," she tilts her head, "like right now, you look like you don't know how to get angry."

I shrug, "I've been told that my personality changes with respect to the person in front of me"

"Yeah, they were correct. Well, you need to understand why we were so hell-bent on killing you and Thomas. Well, apart from the fact that we believed that you both hindered our chance to get out of the Maze, we also needed the Cure and a safe haven." Harriet hikes her bag up on her shoulders.

" Janson gave us very specific instructions about you and Thomas, and being revengeful, we didn't mind at all. But it was Teresa who got all obsessed about it. Almost like killing you was her idea. You know, being a leader and all, I have to make sure that I don't let my girls get hurt."

"That is exactly what I don't understand." I mutter.

"What do you mean?" Fiona asks.

"Well, even if I believe that WICKED wants to kill me because I've always caused them trouble, which I'm he proud of," I add, causing the Group B girls to chuckle, "but I don't understand why they want to kill Thomas. We all know that Thomas and Teresa are really important to the WICKED for some reason. Why will they want to kill him then?"

Do you take me for nuts that I will tell these girls that Thomas built the Maze? I don't want the boy to go to his grave early.

"Yeesh..." Fiona crackles the knuckles of her hands. "I don't know about you, but I don't want to waste a single more of my brain cell, decoding the intension behind Teresa's and WICKED's moves."

"Right." Harriet agrees, "Let's get to know Adelaide. Shall we?"

I twist my head from side to side, pretending to get ready. "Bring on the rapid fire round!"

"How long did you stay?"

"Maybe a little over four months." Harriet nods and smiles at me.

"Favorite spot?"

"The flower bed in the Deadheads."

"What is Deadheads?"

"The Forest. We used to have cemetery in there, so the name."

"Okay, I have some really important question." Fiona buts in. "Did you people have hot water in the bathroom?"

I shake my head. "Not at all. It was so freezing cold, that during my initial days, I went down with fever."

Harriet looks at Fiona. "Same, sis, same."
