CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
ADELAIDE
"So, I did think of finding you, but then I realized that you'll have my head- literally, if I didn't save these kids first." Aislinn's gaze is on my through the looking glass as she is filling me in with everything. My squad and Aislinn, surprisingly had come across The Red Arm after they'd changed their route from the way where Violet told us that we'd find save haven, to their way for saving me.
Aislinn knew The Right Arm as one of the rebel group who she'd worked with once or twice. The group decided that they'd get some food and ammunition and then leave the camp, but then they were under attack of Cranks. So they had to help the Red Arm, fend the Crank invasion.
That was yesterday. After making sure that there was no Crank left, they would've come for me, but by then I came to them.
Newt is sitting beside me and his arm is wrapped around my waist. His thumb is soothingly brushing my waist, making my breath get hitched. My body feels so right next to him. I look at him to find him already looking at me with a small smile on his lips.
"I missed you." I lean near his ear and say, over the loud, rattling noise of the large jeep we are travelling in. Newt puts his hand on my cheek and presses his lips delicately against mine.
"I love you, Addie. Endlessly."
I smile. "I know."
Some of the Group B girls are sitting in another jeep, catching up with Aris, while the boys, Aislinn, Aspen, Linda, Jocelyn and I are sitting together.
"I would really love to know how the Group B had a one-eighty degree change in their attitude, ya know!" Thomas leans, from the back and poke his head between me and Newt, keeping a weary gaze on Aspen, Jocelyn and Linda, who are glaring the boy.
Should I tell him about Teresa?
He will get hurt for sure.
"I have crazy persuasion skills, did you forget that?"
Earlier, I had asked the girls not to mention about Teresa to anyone, until I give the green signal. They, surprisingly didn't question me.
The Group B members look at me and I subtly shake my head, signaling them not to tell anything about Teresa.
"Yeah, but it's kind too absurd, Addie, don't ya think?" Newt says. I find Aislinn looking at me with confusion witches in her eyes.
She knows that I am avoiding Teresa.
"Guys, excuse me!" Jocelyn clears her throat loudly, "We are right here, okay! Don't talk as if we are not."
"And we are not inhumane," Linda glares at Thomas who flinches back visibly, "We had a misunderstanding and we cleared it up."
"Well, they did." I get the attention of the boys, "They didn't know much about Janson. They were believing him and I told them that I know Aris."
The three boys wait for me to continue but I stop speaking.
"What?" Minho scrunches his nose, "That's it?"
I shrug. "Aris did the trick."
Minho scoffs and leans back on his seat, his lips pulled in a pout, mumbling words under his breath.
He still doesn't like Aris much, does he?
I look out of the window at the sky (night sky description)
"Okay, correct me if I'm wrong," I speak up suddenly, directing the question to everyone, "Isn't the sundown the active time for the Cranks?"
"Actually, it's from sundown to the dawn." Thomas corrects me.
"So, what in the world are you doing out here, at sundown?"
"We were given in charge of guarding the area. After the Crank Invasion, everyone is really anxious."
I scratch my cheek and furrow my eyebrows, "Doesn't it seem that the host is giving too much work to their guests? And on top of that, you all are inexperienced. How can someone give you such a risky task?"
The boys look at each other for a brief moment. It looks like a silent conversation is going on between them.
"I didn't know that everyone knows telepathy, now." I add, trying to be less testy.
"Woah!" Minho leans back, raising his eyebrows, "What happened to you? Is that your time of the month?"
I sneer and lean over Newt, slapping Minho on the back of his head.
"Ah shit!" he rubs his head, wincing.
"Aye!" Aislinn yells at the both of us her eyes flickering between the looking glass and on the road, "Don't behave like a bunch of hooligans. My driving's a little rusty." She mumbles the last part.
"Now tell?" i glare at the Asian boy.
Minho rolls his eyes. "Look, we know he's been a complete shank head to us, but we have no choice. We have to play by his rules and get all the help we can. And moreover," he leans back on the seat, folding his arms, "we weren't supposed to stick there for more than a day or so. And we were going to go tomorrow."
"So, now that Adelaide is here, what are you gonna do now?" Linda tries to take part in the conversation.
Newt bites his lip as his eyes flickers to my lap. His leg bobs up and down slightly, something he does when he's in a problem whose solution he can't find.
"I will have to contact my group. The Right Arm has radio, Brenda knows how to use it," Aislinn answers for the boys. "Hopefully, my friends have done something by now."
"Whatever it is, I don't like the sound of Vince and I've not even met him. So the faster we get out of his area, the better." I grumble.
A/N:
kind of a very short and a filler chapter, but trust me the next one would be cute one.
