It came as no surprise to Rhea that the moment Mason got his hands on his stupid soap rock that he would've skipped town and left his family in the dust. She could tell from the second he pulled into their driveway that he wasn't there to reconnect; rather that he was there to obtain something from them because that was the type of person he is. What is surprising, however, was the fact that he had the balls to tell anyone at all that he was leaving—and while it wasn't his niece and nephew, it was their mom via text message. It's not considered a proper goodbye, but in Mason Lockwood standards, it's better than nothing.

Mason has a tendency to be flaky and just a downright a piece of shit. Rhea remembers how her dad complained to her mom regularly about how he had bailed on him again or didn't keep his word on something that they had agreed to do previously. Rhea thinks her twin is taking his departure a lot harder than she was because she was expecting it from the get-go, while Tyler had a bit more hope that he would stick around this time. She feels bad for him because despite the issues around the whole werewolf thing, Tyler did make a connection with Mason in a way—she thinks it's because it's a male role model he can look up to, since now he's only surrounded by women.

While Rhea is pissed about her uncle's absence, she is sad about it in a way. She is scared about not knowing her heritage; and about werewolves; and she has no one to turn to ask about it since Caroline was still avoiding her. She can't understand why, and it's painful to see someone she was so close to exclude her from everything; while the three of them carried on like nothing was happening, leaving their other friend to watch from a distance. She was thankful that Tyler was there, otherwise she would just be completely alone. Since Mason's departure, Tyler most likely thought the same way and was hoping to rely on the company of his twin to keep him sane.

While he had Matt, there was some things—like their stupid werewolf family curse—that he couldn't talk to him about. He only had her, and Jeremy Gilbert—who was now avoiding him for whatever reason. The last anyone had seen of him was when they had begun the preparations for the annual Lockwood family masquerade ball.

Rhea wasn't sure why they didn't cancel it since it was Richard's favourite founding family event and it was scheduled so close to his death. But, then again, Rhea's sure she just answered her own question and their mom was using it as a way to commemorate her husband.

It felt weird getting ready on her lonesome this year. Usually she would be with Caroline, Bonnie and Elena; and the four of them would be fighting for the best lighting and spot in front of the mirror, listening to music and just hanging out until it was time to go downstairs with the rest of the guests. They'd usually stay the whole weekend at the Lockwood mansion and they would watch movies, order takeout and sometimes even sneak some of the leftover alcohol from the ball into Rhea's room where they'd get drunk off a few sips of champagne.
