29 What a day

A few moments later, the doctor took our little River and wrapped him tightly in a warm blanket and then placed him in Kyle's waiting arms. I followed his gaze, he looked at the little bundle in his arms and for that moment fatigue, pain and exhaustion were forgotten.

"I'll leave you alone for a few minutes. Congratulations." the doctor said quietly as he left the ambulance, carefully closing the door behind him.

Neither of us said a word. We just sat there and soaked up the first minutes of our son's life. There was no better feeling in this world, I was sure of it.

"What a day..." said Kyle softly.

"Indeed. Pretty rough day for all three of us, I'd say," I agreed with him.

"I don't even know what to say... I'm just overwhelmed." he whispered.

"I feel the same way." I smiled tiredly.

At that moment, a knock was heard on the vehicle door.

"Come in." I said quietly.

"I'm sorry to bother you guys, but we need to get you and the baby to the hospital now, Y/N. And Kyle? You need to get into the ice bath so your swelling doesn't get any worse and we also need to check you out to make sure you're okay." said the doctor who delivered the baby.

"There's no way I'm leaving those two alone right now. I'm fine. I'm going to the hospital with them right away." replied Kyle stubbornly.

"Kyle, listen to me. I know you're..." the doctor began.

"No, I'm staying with my family." he growled.

"Kyle baby, look at me!" I demanded. And that's exactly what he did.

"Baby, let them check you out and then you come to the hospital after. I need you healthy, honey. And River needs you healthy. It won't take long. And you need to check your levels and eat something. Please think about your health. Please! I love you and I don't want anything to happen to you." I begged my husband.

I could tell he was torn, but he couldn't deny that I was right.

"Okay. You're right. I'll be with you guys as soon as I can. Take good care of you and the little guy. I love you guys." breathed Kyle and then leaned in to kiss me goodbye.

"Daddy will be with you again real soon RJ. Be good for Mommy!" he whispered to the baby and gave him a kiss on the cheek before giving him to me.

Then we were taken to the hospital where both the baby and I were thoroughly examined. I was worried if everything was okay with River, since he was born prematurely. Thankfully, those worries were unnecessary. Our little man was well developed and top fit. Apparently a champion from day one.

When we were finally taken to a room, I was told to try to nurse him, but I couldn't. I started to panic, but the nurse quickly calmed me down. Since he was born a couple weeks early, it was not uncommon for me to not have breast milk for him yet. That would come within a few days. In the meantime, he got formula.

As I lay in bed feeding him the bottle, I stared at him the whole time lovingly and listened to the cute little noises he made. I barely noticed the door open and someone come in.

"Mrs. O'Reilly? Your husband has arrived." the nurse said and as I looked up at her Kyle came into the room just behind her.

"Hey..." I spoke softly and beamed at him.

"Hey, beautiful. How are you feeling?" he asked as he gave me a kiss on the forehead and then joined me in bed.

"The same way you do, I'd say. Tired, sore, but overjoyed." I replied, resting my head gently against his chest.

"I think he's full. Do you want to take him? He needs a burp," I said.

"Nothing I'd like better than that. Come here RJ!" replied Kyle, taking his son in his arms.

After he burped, it didn't take long for him to glide into the land of dreams. Carefully, Kyle placed the baby in the bassinet that stood next to the bed.

"Good night River Jaymes O'Reilly. Mommy and Daddy love you." Kyle whispered to the little one and then laid back in bed with me.

It wasn't long before we too drifted off to sleep. We were both completely exhausted. My last thoughts were how grateful I was for my two men and that I couldn't wait to go home. There were two other someones waiting who probably couldn't wait to meet little River.
