POV—Todoroki Shoto
Don't let me go.
I race to her.
And then I am buried in her neck,
and my arms are around her shoulders
and I press my head into her chest,
listening to her heartbeat.
Don't let me go.
Ba-bum.
Beep.
Ba-bum.
Beep.
In sync with the monitor.
"Ikari—"
And I tell myself that I must be in some kind of elaborate dream, but her heart continues to beat and I am shocked speechless. I squeeze tightly. I tell myself it isn't real, but I feel her breathing under me. I take a huge breath, shakily letting it out, but I don't have enough air. All my instincts tell myself to hold her. As I lay there, still trying to gasp for breath, a gently hand rests on my head.
"You..."
I bury myself in her scent even more, breathing in lemony shampoo.
The hand pats my head.
"Tell me this is real."
It strokes my hair, twisting strands around and around, as if saying yes.
My heart races like it has never raced before as I truly accept that she is alive. She is alive, here, right now, patting my head. It takes me a few moments to find that tears have leaked out of my eyes and traveled down my face, specking Ikari's hospital gown. I sit up from my position, still taking in breathes, and I wipe away the tears. Her eyes are like liquid gold as I look into them, still half-closed and tired, but they're open.
"I... I need to get the nurse—" and then I am dashing out of the room, looking for the nurse, and when I find her I nearly collide into the wall next to her. "She's awake."
"Dear, I know you would like to believe—"
"I'm serious. She's awake."
The nurse's eyes narrow. She sighs, noticing the desperation in my eyes, and puts down her clipboard. With a quick nod to her other colleague, the nurse makes her way patiently to Ikari's room as I hurry ahead, opening the door and wildly gesturing for the nurse to come in. When she finally enters and notices Ikari's open eyes, her eyes widen— as wide as they can go— and she rushes out of the room, coming back with the doctor seconds later.
