Don't Let Me Go.

Don't let me go.

There was never one instance in my life where I felt so much fear in so little time.

For a moment, I imagine Hebinoya tipping over, falling to her death.

And for some reason, I cannot imagine it.

The next feeling, after the suffocating grip of death ebbs away,

I decide that I will not— I cannot— let her die.

Don't let me go.

Her eyes are dim. She looks back at me with tears in her eyes, her feet barely at the edge of the building. A breeze carries my bangs away from my face as my chest tightens, depriving me of air.

"Ikari?" I shout. I feel a sudden lump in my throat.

Wind tickles her hair and she gives me a small, sad smile.

She's never smiled like that before, never.

So broken.

Even though it sits on her face, pristine and untouched, unshed tears reflect in her eyes. They dance, threatening to spill as her lips tremble. Hebinoya shifts. My stomach tightens. One wrong move can end her life. I take a cautionary step forward, my mind whirring with things to say.

"Ikari, listen to me."

I use her first name. Anything to catch her attention, to distract her from jumping. So close to death.
