While walking back to school, I couldn't shake off the irritation from Oscar's words. But I was determined not to let him ruin my mood—again.

After we bought the tickets, we plowed through the remaining classes, my mind buzzing with thoughts of the dance. I could hardly contain my excitement.

When we got home, Amelie was already on a mission, rifling through her closet like a whirlwind. "I know exactly what I want to wear!" she declared, pulling out a suit

I raised an eyebrow, impressed. "You're going to outshine everyone!"

Amelie looked over at me, concern flickering in her eyes. "You worried about what Spooky said before?"

I shrugged, trying to play it cool. "A little. This guy really doesn't like it when things don't go his way. But honestly, what's he going to do? He can't stop me from going to the dance."

As we got ready, I half-expected Oscar to pop up with some dramatic intervention or lecture, but he was nowhere to be found. Lucky for me. I breathed a sigh of relief, thinking maybe he had finally cooled off about the whole situation.

"See? No Spooky drama," I said to Amelie, flashing her a confident smile as I adjusted my hair. "Maybe he's finally realized he can't control my life."

Amelie grinned back, her excitement infectious. Tonight was going to be great, and no amount of Oscar's attitude could dim my sparkle.

We arrived at the venue for the dance, but my excitement quickly faded when I saw a group of people milling about in front of a closed door.

Amelie and I hurried over to our friends.

"What's happening? What is it?" I asked Ruby, my brow furrowed with concern.

"Some bullshit is what it is. They canceled the dance because of a fight," Jasmine replied, her voice tinged with frustration.

Jamal added, "It wasn't just that. Some fool pulled out a gun."

Jasmine rolled her eyes. "Who cares? It took me forever to get ready. I even shaved my chocha for this. And it was a two-man job."

Cesar chimed in, "Don't worry, guys. Monse and I have a plan." He raised his voice, shouting, "Party at Monse's!"

Amelie nudged me with a grin. "Not what we planned, but at least the night's not a total waste."

"I'm sure the party will be much more fun anyway," I replied, trying to shake off my disappointment.

We walked over to Monse's house to help set everything up. As I filled a bowl with chips, I couldn't help but wonder where Owen was. I hadn't seen him all evening, and I sent him a quick text:

Elly: Hey Owen. I don't know if you heard already, but the dance was canceled. Something about a fight. We're at a party at Monse's place. I'd be happy to see you there. Bye 👋🏻

I waited for a reply, but nothing came. Maybe his phone was off.

Looking around, I could see everyone else buzzing with energy—people chatting, laughing, and dancing, while I stood there glued to my phone. I finally decided to shut it off and join my friends.

We grabbed a few drinks to kick things off. The atmosphere was fun and loose, with mysterious liquids sloshing around in our plastic cups. Laughter was everywhere, and the music was pumping, drawing people into the living room like moths to a flame. Soon enough, Amelie and Jasmine dragged me onto the dance floor, and I couldn't help but get caught up in the vibe.
