——- beginning of season 2 ——-
Elly: "Just leave me alone, okay?"
Dad: "Elly! Stop! I don't know what's going on with you since you got back from Freeridge, but your behavior is unacceptable. Your mother and I are tired of tiptoeing around you. Please, just tell us what's happening."
Mom: "We're really worried about you, my love."
Elly: "I'm sorry."
Mom: "We know you are. But we need to understand what's going on. This isn't like you."
Elly: "It's nothing. We talked about it. What happened back in Freeridge with my friends—it was hard, okay?"
Dad: "But you seemed fine afterward. And then, suddenly, everything changed for the worse."
Elly: "I really don't know what to say. I promise I'll behave better."
Mom: "Okay, but is there really nothing else bothering you?"
Elly: "No, nothing happened."
That was a lie. So much had happened.I stormed out of the living room and slammed the door to my bedroom behind me. I collapsed onto my bed, releasing a shaky sigh.
So much had happened, but how could I even begin to explain it to my parents? Where would I start?
I met a guy in Freeridge—an older guy who had been in prison, a gang boss. Everything had been amazing until my friends were shot, forcing me to go back to Germany. We kept in touch for a while, but then he ghosted me, and before I knew it, he was back with his ex.
I could only imagine how my parents would react to that revelation. They'd probably lock me in my room until I turned eighteen if they knew the truth.
I grabbed my phone, searching for Oscar's name in my messages. It took longer than expected to find our conversation. The farther down I scrolled, the more it hit me just how much time had passed without any contact.
I read through our chat for the umpteenth time:
Elly: "Hey."
Oscar: "Hey."
Elly: "How have you been?"
Oscar: "Good. You?"
Elly: "Me too. I didn't hear from you in a while. Is everything okay?"
Oscar: "Yeah. All good. I'm kinda busy at the moment. Catch you another time."
Elly: "Wait. This is the first time in almost two weeks we're talking, and you want to leave?"
Oscar: "I'm busy."
Elly: "Okay, I see how it is. Bye."
Oscar: "What the hell is wrong with you?"
Elly: "Me? I'm not acting like an asshole."
Oscar: "I just said I'm busy. Get over it."
Elly: "Your priorities say it all."
Oscar: "What does that even mean?"
Elly: "It means you clearly think everything else is more important than talking to your girlfriend."
Elly: "Am I even still your girlfriend?"
Oscar: "Yes."
Oscar: "I mean, I don't know..."
Oscar: "I guess not."The words hit me like lightning.
Elly: "Are you for real?"
Oscar: "Don't be so dramatic."
Elly: "What the hell? You just say something like that without any explanation?"
Oscar: "😒🙄"
Elly: "Fuck off 🖕🏻"
Oscar: "Let me set it straight for you. I don't want to be with you anymore. Sorry I didn't tell you earlier, but now you know. Move on with your life. You're better off without me. Don't contact me again. Delete my number. Bye."
Elly: "Fine then. Have a good life."
Oscar: "I'm serious. We're done. No need to talk anymore."
Elly: "Well, I think there's still a lot to talk about. Like, maybe you could give me a reason for this."He typed, paused, typed again, and paused. It was excruciating. After what felt like an eternity, he finally hit send.
Oscar: "I'm back together with my ex."
