The days without any word from Oscar weighed heavily on me. I was anxious, my mind a mess of worry, irritation, and sleeplessness. The only update came from Monse, who casually mentioned that Cesar had ventured alone into Prophet$ territory to confront Latrell. That news did nothing to ease my mind, only adding to the gnawing tension.
Then, one day, my phone buzzed. Oscar's name lit up the screen, and relief washed over me as I answered, barely steadying my hands from the adrenaline rush.
Oscar: "Hey, mi amor."
Elly: "Oscar! I'm so glad to hear from you and know you're okay."
Oscar: "Didn't I promise? What kind of wimp do you think your man is? Takes much more than some weak-ass Prophet$ to blast my ass."" he chuckled, sounding like himself.
Elly: "I heard Cesar went to see Latrell alone. Did you hear from him?"
Oscar paused, his tone dropping. "Yeah. I handled it."
Elly: "You always say that, but I never know what it means..."
Oscar: "That's the point. It's my job to keep you away from all that mess. You don't need to be involved in gang shit."
Elly: "Just a little information, though. It'd help."
There was a brief silence, as though he was considering it.
Oscar: "Come over, then. We'll tell you what's going on."
Elly: "We?"
Oscar: "You'll see."
The next few minutes were a quiet scramble as I dressed, moving as silently as I could so my parents wouldn't notice. Then I hurried to Oscar's place, bracing myself for whatever waited.
I unlocked the door and stepped inside, finding Oscar in the kitchen, stirring something on the stove. At the table sat Cesar, alive and unharmed, looking a bit worn but with a slight grin on his face.
Elly: "Cesar!" I called, running over and hugging him tightly.
Oscar glanced over, a relieved smile playing on his face as he set plates on the table. He smirked, "Alright, enough with the hugs, remember who your boyfriend is."
I let go of Cesar, laughing as I playfully smacked Oscar on the arm. "You could've told me Cesar was here. We've all been worried sick."
Oscar shrugged, feigning innocence. "We had to be low-key for a while."
Cesar chuckled, "It was necessary. But let me tell you, Oscar's plan was something else."
Oscar joined us at the table, serving the food. "It worked, didn't it?"
Cesar leaned in, explaining. "Monse, Ruby, and Jamal tried to buy my safety with the RollerWorld cash. At the same time, some Santos dropped off marked cash from that bank job. Oscar took the RollerWorld money and laid out a plan to get rid of as much of the marked cash as possible — by planting it with the Prophet$ and letting the cops find it."
Elly: "But how could you manage that without them catching on?"
Oscar leaned back, a hint of satisfaction in his eyes. "Cesar approached them, pretending to snitch and offering 50 grand of the money for protection. Meanwhile, I went to them myself, 'negotiating' another 150 grand in cash to keep Cesar, you, and your friends safe." He chuckled, "They bought it without a second thought."
Cesar nodded, smiling as he continued, "And they didn't waste any time spending that cash. It didn't take long before it popped up all over town. The cops moved in, and the Prophet$ got busted."
