After our kiss, going home was the last thing on my mind. I wanted to spend more time with Oscar and make up for the lost time, to feel like things were right again.
"Take me to your place," I said with a casual grin. His eyes lit up instantly, the happiness there undeniable. Just that look made everything worth it.
As we drove, I pulled out my phone to call my parents.
"Hey, Mom," I said, keeping my voice casual. "Just checking in—would it be cool if I stayed somewhere else tonight?"
There was a brief pause before she responded, a little curious. "Where exactly is 'somewhere else'?"
I bit my lip, stifling a laugh. "You remember that guy I told you about, the one I dated when I was here last time? He dropped by the diner today, and I wanted to spend some more time catching up with him."
Mom was silent for a moment, considering. "And this mystery man's name is...?"
I could almost see the look on her face. "I'll introduce him soon, I promise. Just need to... test the waters, see if things are still the same."
She mulled it over before responding. "Alright, but be responsible, and don't do anything you don't want to."
I chuckled. "I know, Mom."
From the background, I heard my dad's voice chime in. "Tell her if she needs a ride home, she can call me anytime. Doesn't matter what time it is."
Mom echoed his words, but I cut her off with a smile. "I heard him, don't worry. Thanks, Dad."
Mother: "By the way, do you have condoms?"
Elly: "Mom! Seriously?"
Oscar let out a shocked gasp, and I could hear my dad groaning in the background.
Mother: "What? We don't talk about condoms anymore in this house?"
I sighed. "Okay, I'm hanging up now before I die of secondhand embarrassment. Love you, bye!"
I quickly ended the call, letting out a long breath.
Oscar: "Okay, I'm officially traumatized."
I couldn't help but laugh at his dramatic reaction.
Elly: "Why?"
Oscar: "How can your parents be so chill about you spending the night with me... and, you know, all that other stuff?"
I laughed even harder, loving how flustered he looked.
Elly: "Honestly? They're probably just excited to have the house to themselves. Maybe they're the ones who are in the mood."
His face was priceless—complete disbelief mixed with a hint of horror.
Oscar: "Yep, you're definitely 1000% white."
Elly: "Or maybe my parents are just cool. We've always been honest with each other. If I'd lied and said I was staying with a friend, they'd find out eventually and never trust me again. This way, they know what's up, and I know I can talk to them about personal stuff."
Oscar: "Sounds like a healthy relationship. Low-key jealous."
Elly: "It works for us. So what about your parents? What was your relationship like?"
He shifted in his seat, looking uncomfortable at the thought of diving into his own family history.
Oscar: "Eh, nothing worth talking about. Shitty parents. Let's not kill the mood."
He smirked, the teasing glint back in his eyes.
Oscar: "Instead, why don't you tell me what you're planning for tonight that requires the condoms your mom brought up?"
