Yesterday, after our kiss, Oscar stuck around to help babysit the twins. When my sister texted that she'd be home soon, Oscar made his escape.
"When are you getting back? I can't wait to pick up where we left off," he said, his tone teasing, eyes sparkling with mischief.
I couldn't help but smile like a lovesick puppy. "I still need to help decorate. But I'll hurry back as soon as I can."
He leaned in and gave me a quick kiss, his lips warm and inviting, making me feel all tingly inside. Watching him walk away, I felt like I was grinning like a total dork.
Just a few minutes later, my sister burst in, practically struggling under the weight of five huge bags of food and decorations.
"Elly! Where are you when I need you?!" Katharina huffed, tossing the bags dramatically onto the counter.
I rushed over to help her, trying to keep it light. "Chill, I'm here!" I raised an eyebrow at the mountain of stuff.
"What's all this? Did you empty the whole store?"
"Pretty much! You won't believe how seriously Americans take Halloween. Check out those bags; there's something for you in there somewhere," she replied, her voice a mix of excitement and exhaustion.
I started rummaging through the bags, feeling a rush of curiosity and fun.
"First things first, are my kids still alive?" Katharina asked, looking around.
I laughed. "Yep! They're alive, healthy, and thriving. I fed them, cleaned them, and we even played a little."
Katharina smirked. "You know they're not dogs, right?"
I shrugged, trying to keep a straight face. "I'm not so sure. One of them caught a frisbee with his mouth earlier."
"Okay, fair point. So where do we start? Let's decorate the garden first," she said, clearly ready to dive into the Halloween chaos.
I sighed, feeling the weight of the day settle in. This was going to be a long one.
By the evening, I was totally wiped out and happy to get home. As soon as I walked through the door, Oscar quickly leaned in and snuck a kiss. The moment was electric, sending a rush of warmth through me, and I couldn't help but grin like a total fool. Definitely the best welcome home I could ask for.
When Amelie and Cesar walked into the room, Oscar straightened up, his expression shifting back to casual. He leaned against the wall, arms crossed, trying to play it cool. I could see the corners of his mouth twitching with suppressed laughter, as if he couldn't wait to relive that little moment once we were alone again.
Amelie zipped over to me, practically buzzing with excitement. "Hey, Elly! We were just chatting about Halloween plans!"
I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms. Thanks to my sister, I was totally over Halloween at this point. "Yeah, I've noticed Americans are way too into it," I replied with a smirk.
Cesar jumped in, grinning like he just found a hidden treasure. "We're thinking about heading to Brentwood."
"Where's that?" I asked, genuinely curious.
"Not far—about 15 minutes. Ruby's abuelita is driving us," he said with a shrug.
"Why don't we just stick around here in Freeridge?" I suggested.
Oscar's expression suddenly got serious, and he shot me that protective look that always made my heart flutter. "It's safer there. Just rich folks, so no drama. But if anything goes down, you'll call me, right?"
