------------Kaitlyn---------------

A month ago when I left this castle, I took—or should I say, stole—something from here. That something thought me a lot about myself and my mate.

Mate.

Gee. It sounds so bizarre saying it even in my head.

'BUT YOU LIKE IT.' I could feel Pretty smirking a wolfy smirk inside my head.

Ignoring her, I venture off to the library where I know Valerian is. My ears had picked up the sound of his footsteps heading in this direction earlier after he parted from Marilla and the others.

Once I'm in front of the library's entrance, I take a glance down at myself before entering in.

The smell of books mixed with the unmistakably scent of my mate makes me feel dizzy with a heady a sensation. Shaking my head at it, I take another step in and then another until I spot Valerian seated on one of the many wooden tables next to the large windows adjacent to the rack of bookshelves.

Valerian's entire form freezes with tension the moment he senses me but he doesn't as much as lift his gaze up from the book he's reading.

Got a tough resistance, don't you? To think you've known I was your mate all along and you never tried anything except subtle flirting when we were alone.

I take into his frame. Valerian's green eyes are hidden from sight as his dark lashes cast a shadow down his eyelid and those messy locks fall over his forhead while he stubbornly remains focused on his book as if my presence doesn't bother him at all.

Unknowingly, a smile tugs onto my lips suddenly finding his resistance cute. I frown when the realisation sinks in.

'Ugh, stop messing with my head, Pretty!'

'WHAT DID I-' Before she could continue, I cut her off and focus my attention back on Valerian.

"Can I borrow a book from here?" I ask gauzing his reaction.

Valerian's hands stills but after much contemplating, he finally lifts his head to look my way, those green eyes meeting mine after not seeing them for a whole month.

My breath catches in my throat and I squeeze my mouth shut from hanging as the effects of the mate bond hit me in full force. My heart starts thundering in my chest making me look anywhere but at him.

From the corner of my eyes, I see him get off the chair and head my way. I stay stone still as he walks past me towards the bookshelf behind me.

"Which book do you want, Miss Winch-" He clears his throat, "Kaitlyn."

Pretty squeals in my head as if it is her name he's speaking while I try to hide the blush casting my cheeks by not turning to him.

Get your head straight, you fool! Remember what you came here for. Oh wait!

"The Ancient Creatures Boo-" My words get caught in my throat the moment I turn around.

Valerian is standing right in front of me. So close that I can smell his maddening scent. Close enough that I can see flecks of brown among the green in his eyes. Before I can comprehend why he's standing up so close to me or get a word out, he gently grabs my hand and lifts it up to his face.

I flinch at the tingles mixed with the burning sensation of my hand that I had dipped into fire.

Valerian's eyes darken at the flinch and he carefully holds my wrist examining the burn keenly. When those eyes meet mine, they soften considerably.
