Silence. All I ever wanted was to be in my own world of silence, to escape from humanities expectations. Now... now I grow jealous of every small insect I hear during the night. It must be nice to still be privileged with noise and not be slaughtered as a reward.

Day 89

The sun shone brightly, reflecting off the autumn leaves. A shadow cast across my face as I stare upon 'Main St' through the pharmacy window. Yesterday, Marcus became really sick. So sick that he was sweating profoundly and could hardly breath. Evelyn said that she would go to the pharmacy and collect supplies but Lee didn't want her to go alone. So here we are, like sitting ducks while Evelyn searches for the right medicine. Regan was exploring the store as Beau ran around. I was slightly scared that Beau would make a loud sound but Marcus was my bigger worry. He was super pale and his eyes looked full of fear. I gently tapped his shoulder, grabbing his attention.

"Do you want some water?" I signed

I was caught off guard when he shook his head 'no'. Anyone would have thought that he was thirsty by his chapped lips. I looked down, sighing in disappointment that I couldn't get him to keep hydrated. I suddenly felt a pair of hands come in contact with mine. Surprised, i looked at Marcus to find that he was already staring at me.

"I promise, I'm okay." He signed, his cheeks slightly pink.

He removed his hands from mine, folding them across his chest in attempt to warm himself up. Marcus's hands were soft and delicate, the loss of contact made me realise that he was actually holding my hands. As I look out the window, I saw that it was getting late. I stood up, giving Marcus one of my jackets and walked around to find Evelyn or Lee.

I came across Beau. He was reaching for something on the top shelf. I looked behind me to see Regan's eyes wide, her eyes glued to where Beau was standing. I turn back to see the thing he was reaching for fall off the top shelf. Panic set in as I bolted for Beau. Falling on my knees, I slid across the hard ground gracefully catching the toy in my arms. Regan came running up from behind me and instantly started signing to Beau about how he can't do things like that. I noticed that after Regan left, Beau looked quite upset, so out of guilt I took the batteries from the toy and handed the rocket to Beau. His face instantly lit up with joy. He started walking around the shop, pretending the rocket was flying in his hands. I smiled, Beau was such an adorable little boy.

I slowly made my way back over to Marcus, placing the batteries on a near by counter. He was trying to get up but I frantically waved my hands causing him to stop.

"What are you doing! You need to stay seated!" I signed, genuinely worried for his health.

He just smiled cutely at me and held his hands out Infront of him. I got the hint and grabbed his hands, pulling him up to stand. I might have pulled a bit hard since he landed in my arms, but hey I'm not complaining. We silently laughed at each other, stopping when we saw Lee and Evelyn approach the exit.

"It's time to go kids." Lee signed, grabbing his back from beside the door.

I helped Marcus walk to the door, I noticed Beau walked out with the rocket in his hands but I didn't think anything of it since I took the batteries out. Once everyone was outside and ready to go, we walked in a single file line toward the bridge. Marcus and Regan were walking close behind their mother as Lee was walking Infront. I was walking towards the back, checking on Beau every now and then since he was a slow walker.

Seeing Marcus and Regan's face light up as they signed a conversation with their mother made me remember my own. I haven't been able to find out if she was alive or not. Lee was kindly helping me search the radio channels to see if we could try and contact her but there was nothing. It's hard not knowing whether she was alive or not. If she was, she probably thought I was dead and that made me feel sick to the stomach. I wonder if-

Sound? I haven't heard sound for ages. Where is that coming from?..

My face dropped in realisation. That sound was coming from behind me, and it was really REALLY loud. I spun my body and immediately ran as fast as I ever had. I needed to get to Beau before the Death Angel did. Even if I died in his place, I wouldn't care. He's too young to die.

Marcus's POV

My head pounded when i suddenly heard sound, my ears would have to be super sensitive from not hearing anything for ages.

Wait.. WAIT SOUND?

I turned my body to see [y/n] running like no tomorrow towards Beau. He has a rocket in his hands. It was a race against time, time that she didn't have. My father started running after [y/n] at a rapid pace. I tried to comfort my mum, she started crying uncontrollably. I felt tears prick my eyes, I couldn't watch this, but I had to know if Beau would be okay. I denied any possibility where he died, but it was likely since the Death Angels are much... much faster that any human. In the blink of an eye, my baby brother was gone forever.

Lee's POV

I watched as [y/n] fell to her knees. She was shaking rapidly, tears spilling like small waterfalls from her eyes. I knelt down beside her, placing my hand on her shoulder.

"I- I wasn't fast enough." She whispered between quiet sobs. I qently shushed her, reminding her she can't speak. I moved around so that I was facing her and brought up her chin so that she was looking at me.

"You tried your best, there was nothing else you could have done." I signed to her, tears of my own threatened to spill. I pulled [y/n] into a tight hug, hiding the sounds of her cries.

Sometimes, silence is not enough.

AU- This chapter is slightly shorter than the last by about 300 words. I just didn't know how to drag it out without it being boring but I promise I will make it up to y'all in the next chapters <3
