"Hello," Jake says as he approaches Emily and I.
"Hey," I say back and peck his lips once he's close enough to me. He smiles a little and looks down at Emily. He touches her hand a bit and he looks back at me. "Can you hold her?" I ask and he nods, taking her from me.
He lifts her up above his head and she laughs. I smile and so does Jake. He eases her back down. We ignore the people who walk by and stare at us.
"Come on," Jake says and lightly grabs my arm, walking into the school.
"What?" I ask and he looks back at me.
"She has been a complete ass hole to me all day," he says back and I open the door to the school. I remember him saying something about his teacher a few days ago. We were going to yesterday, but Emily had a check up.
"Why?" I ask and he walks next to me still holding Emily.
"She doesn't like me because of my Dad," he says back and I nod.
His Dad did pretty much what Jake and I did. He still went to school while she stayed home with the baby. The difference was they weren't as happy as Jake and I are. Also, Chris was only fourteen.
She didn't like Chris because he lied a lot. About homework, things like that. She this that Jake is stalling since we had to cancel on her the last time.
We arrive at a wooden closed door. He hands Emily to me and I take her. I cradle her and see that she fell asleep.
He knocks on the door and I step back a little. An older woman with a full head of short grey hair looks through the glass and opens the door, I'm guessing not noticing me.
Jake steps back next to me and it's obvious that's she's in a little bit of shock.
"This is Emily my daughter and Jamie my fiancée." he says back and I lightly wave at her. I smile at how weird it sounds for him to call me fiancée, not girlfriend.
"I thought she was your girlfriend?" she asks and he looks at me then at her.
"She was, it's recent." he says, sort of talking for me.
"How old are you two?" she asks and walks inside. We follow inside with Jake leading.
"I'm nineteen and she's eighteen." he says back to her. I notice that there are several younger kids sitting in the chairs.
My anxiety level goes up a lot, I try to focus on Emily in my arms, not them.
I move the hair that's on her forehead to the side of her face and she stirs a bit. Her mouth very gently moves up and down while she sleeps.
I get this weird feeling that I used to feel all the time, the whispering. I can't make out what the people sitting at the desks are saying, but I have a feeling it's about us.
I try to settle my breathing. I also try to convince myself that I'm just worried too much.
I feel Jake puts his arm around my waist and he looks at me. The teacher shuffles through papers and I have completely ignored what they were saying.
"You okay?" he asks me so only I can hear. I nod and he strokes my side a little. I very lightly bounce Emily in my arms.
"You guys are a little young huh?" she asks and he nods.
"I guess, it doesn't really matter though," he says to her and she looks at me.
"You don't talk much do you?" she asks and I shrugs a little, knowing there is no way I can force words out of my mouth. She smiles at me then looks back at him. "Well, I'm tutoring sixth graders, I kind of have to kick you out," she says and we both nod.
"That's fine," he says back to her and she waves at us. We wave back and he opens the door for me. I walk out and he follows quietly shutting the door.
He looks at me and I look back for a minute but then look at the hallway that I remember.
We walk home in almost dead silence, so honestly to know why. We glance at each other every once in a while but that's it.
"You need to take your medicine," he says quietly as we start to approach our street.
"I don't, it's fine." I say back and he looks at me. I don't look back but I can see him in the corner of the eye.
I start to feel rain drops and I put my hand over Emily's face so she doesn't get wet.
"That's a lie," he says and we start to lightly jog inside as the rain picks up. We walk inside and I walk to the bedroom where I lay Emily down.
"It's not, I never go out anyway," I say back and sit on the couch. Jake sits next to me.
"We need to change that too," he says back and I look down then back up, but not at him.
"It's fine." I say back and he shakes his head.
"You're starting to fall into depression again Jamie." he says.
"I'm not," I say back.
"Yes it is and I'm worried about you," Jake says and keeps looking at me seriously.
I don't think I've been that bad. Then again, I never really catch myself. I sigh and don't answer him. I repeatedly bounce my left leg.
Jake puts hand on my leg to stop me and I bite the inside of my lip.
