The New Boy

Chapter twenty-six: part two

"It's open," Jake says to the door once the knocking stops. Maddison and her son, Isaac, walks in.

"John couldn't come, but I..." she starts to talk but Isaac cuts her off.

"Forced me to come," Isaac says and I smile.

"Where is she?" Maddison asks and I stand up.

"Hold on," I say and start to walk to the bedroom. I slowly sit on the bed next to Emily. I pick her small body up and hold her in my arms for a minute.

Emily yawns and slowly opens her eyes. I move my thumb across her forehead and she smiles. I stand up and walk out to the living room.

Maddison looks at me and I carefully hand Emily to her. She looks down at her and I stand next to Jake who is leaning against the wall.

"For a while, I thought you guys were just messing with us about having a baby," Maddison says to us and looks down at her. I shake my head and smile.

After an hour of talking to them, mainly about Emily, we finally leave. After talking, Jake and I decided to go to a local food place. We get into the truck and he drives. We arrive and get a table.

We just sit in silence for a minute while Jake stares into space. I lightly touch his arm and he jumps a bit. He looks at me and I look back.

"You're jumpy," I say to him and he shrugs.

"Oh yeah, sorry," he says back and I smile.

"It's fine, what's wrong?" I ask and keep looking at him. He keeps looking at me and shakes his head, smirking.

"Nothing," he says back and I narrow my eyes at him.

"You're lying, but okay." I say back and he smiles again.

"Are you guys meeting me at the school tomorrow?" he asks and I shrug, nodding.

"We can," I say back and he nods.

"You're coming in too,"

"Why?"

"My teacher didn't believe me when I told her I had a daughter." he says and I smile.

"So you have to prove her wrong?" I ask and he smiles back.

"Yes and no. After class she talked to me and insisted that I was lying. I kept telling her that I wasn't, but she didn't believe me. So yes, to prove her wrong." he says back and laughs a little.

We eat and drive home with little conversation. I know something isn't 'right' with Jake right now but every time I ask he just brushes it off.

We both get out and walk to the door. I open it and hear Emily crying to instant we walk in.

For us, Emily doesn't cry too much. She's a baby, of corse she cries a lot but not every second. She's a pretty happy baby. I'm really hoping she'll be like that her whole life.

Maddison walks out holding Emily and smiles at me and Jake.

"Are you guys-" Maddison starts to talk but Jake quickly cuts her off.

"No, not yet," Jake says quickly and she nods.

"What?" I ask and look up at Jake. He shakes his head and kisses me. He pulls away and looks at me.

"Don't worry about it," he says back to me and Maddison hands crying Emily to me.

"What's wrong baby?" I say quietly to Emily and I look at her. She sort of looks back at me and her crying slowly eases down. I gently kiss her forehead and she smiles.

I guess they were talking and I see that Isaac came into the room too.

"We should probably start going," Maddison says to both of us and smiles. She hugs both of us and Isaac and her leave after a while.

"I'm going to lay Emily down," I say and he nods. I walk to the bedroom and lay her down on the bed. I cover her up and kiss her head. I walk back out and look at Jake. "I want to talk to you," I say to him and he nods.

"About?" he asks and I lean against the wall.

"Why are you acting like this?" I ask and he stands in front of me. I already know he knows what I'm talking about.

He holds the sides of my face and kisses me. I kiss him back and he slowly pulls away.

"You know I love you, a lot right?" he asks and I look at him.

"I love you too, a lot," I say back and he smiles. "I just want to know what's wrong," I ask and he looks down for a minute then back up at me.

"I'm sorry, I'm just nervous." he says back and keeps his hand on my face.

"About what?" I ask and he takes a deep breath. He digs into his pocket. He pulls out a little black box and I instantly know what's happening.

"I know we always mess with the people in the movies... about how 'stereotypical' they are and how funny we think it is. I could tell you that I would be the happiest man alive, I could tell you I will never leave, I could give you that how much I love you speech..
I won't do that though. Becasue even if you say yes or no, all of those things will be true still, Jamie Lynn Kane, I love you," he says and open the box to reveal a ring, I glance at it then back at him. "Will you marry me?" he asks and I look at him, nodding, not being able to control my smiling or crying.

"Yeah, I mean yes," I force out of my mouth. He stands up and I hug him, tightly.

He slowly pulls away and he smiles at me. I smile back and he slide the ring on me. I don't take much time examining it. I kiss him again and he kisses me back.

Emily srarts to wine and I look at Jake who smiles, shrugging.

"The moment's still not ruined," he says and I smile.

"I'll get her," I say and he kisses my forehead. That's something he used to do a lot but doesn't much anymore, but still does some times.

I make her a bottle and walk into the bedroom, giving it to her.
