The halls of Pandora's Vault was silent. As a ghost, Ghostbur was able to sneak past the Warden, guarding the prison fiercely. He was also able to avoid Dream's sights, by going invisible and floating into the prison.
Dream...
Ghostbur didn't like Dream. In fact, after everything that had happened, he could confidently say that he absolutely despised him. It scared him, sometimes, just how deep his hatred and loathing went.
He quickened his steps, slipping through walls to get to the only cell in the entire prison.
Despite what everyone thought of him as, Ghostbur wasn't an idiot. He'd been getting better, recently. He'd been getting smarter; Dream's excuses of vacations and caring didn't fool him anymore.
But unfortunately, Dream was smart, when it came to keeping Tommy locked up. Despite being able to go through walls, despite being able to easily snatch a keycard from Sam if he wanted... none of that would work. Dream had taken every precaution possible when it came to Tommy, and Ghostbur hated it. What was worse is that nobody else knew that Tommy was trapped in here, with Techno having been threatened with whatever 'favour' he apparently owed Dream, and Ghostbur was helpless to do anything.
If he hadn't been so stupid, none of this would've happened. If only he'd stopped Techno from leaving, if only he'd been a better friend-
Finally, he reached the main cell. He quickly spotted Tommy inside, and Tommy looked-
"Tommy," he choked out, collapsing in front of the cell, hands reaching up to slam against the invisible walls that separated them. "I'm sorry."
Tommy... didn't look like himself.
He looked just like how he was, back before he had arrived at Techno's house. He looked worse for wear, and Ghostbur was more than sickened to see bruises and dried blood on his skin.
Tommy looked up, and Ghostbur shuddered at the dull blue eyes that stared at him.
"Oh," Tommy said. "Hi, Ghostbur."
"I-" Ghostbur scrambled for something, anything to say. "Dream's gonna kill you."
He winced after the words came out of his mouth; he didn't want to make Tommy fear more. But instead of reacting like how Ghostbur expected him to react, Tommy was quiet. Too quiet.
"I know," he sighed, and his voice was nothing like the bright-eyed boy Ghostbur had gotten to know, nor the fierce, angry one. Instead, at this very moment, Tommy just looked... tired.
"Better now than later, I guess," Tommy continued, and with those words, Ghostbur's mind drew up an image that he wasn't sure he liked. "It's not like he'd let me stay dead for long."
Ghostbur shivered at the next words that came out of his mouth.
"He thinks I'm too fun for that."
"W-what?"
"...nevermind, Ghostbur. It's fine."
How could Tommy say something like that with a straight face, when he was trapped in this room, set to be executed?
"I'm sorry," Ghostbur whispered again, not sure what else to say. "I- I'll kill him for you. If you don't survive. I'll do everything in my power for that. I promise. And if- if you do, I'll do everything to rescue you."
"Don't risk your life for me," Tommy frowned. Ghostbur wanted to scream at him, because why shouldn't he? Tommy was unique, he was an individual, he didn't deserve to die. Ghostbur was just the ghost of a dead man; truthfully, even though death was a scary thing, he didn't think he'd mind it at all if it was to save Tommy.
A few loud noises were made. Ghostbur had no idea what they were, but Tommy stiffened.
"You should go," he said. "Please."
Ghostbur didn't want to go, but Tommy looked so desperate, and if it would make Tommy stop staring at him so hopelessly...
Ghostbur turned away, despite the pain in his chest.
"Tell Tubbo that I'll miss him," Tommy said suddenly, pausing Ghostbur in his tracks. "Techno, too."
Ghostbur glanced back, and spotted Tommy curled up into a ball, resting his head against his knees. He looked so tired, like he'd already given up hope. Like he already knew Techno would fail.
"Okay," Ghostbur replied, because what else would he be able to say? "I will."
"Thanks, Ghostbur. I'll miss you too," Tommy murmured, and Ghostbur left, plans forming in his mind.
In the end, he was too late.
The notice came out the next day, and Dream found some sick enthusiasm in parading Tommy's dead body for the world to see. He bragged about his abuse, under the pretence of 'punishment' and 'justice'. It was sickening.
He even recorded a video of the execution itself, and played it for the whole world to see. Ghostbur would never be able to forget Tommy's shrieks; how, despite looking so devoid of life, he still fought back, still fought against Dream, even it was futile.
Ghostbur would not let Dream have the last laugh.
Something stirred inside of him, as he remembered how Tommy looked yesterday, and Ghostbur burned.
