It was early November and the mild 10am sun shone brightly in the city of Lagos. Ajay walked out of Almonds and Vanilla bakery, with a box of cake in her hands. The white play suit which she was putting on gave her the glow she desired. It was her man's birthday and even though he was outrightly against any form of celebration, she was determined to surprise him.
She smiled brightly, bringing down her shades that were placed on her short wig to her face to protect her eyes from the bright sun. She entered her car and placed the cake carefully on the passenger's seat before fastening her seat belt and zooming off to Ikorodu where Fejiro lived. Though he never agreed to take her to his house, Ajay had used her connections to figure out where it would be.
The road from the junction close to Fejiro's house was really bad and Ajay found herself gushing at how bad a road could be. There were so many port holes and stones on the rough part. Getting to the street, she couldn't figure out which was Fejiro's as they all looked almost similar to her. She found Yemisi who was playing Ayo with her friends and beckoned on her.
"Aunty good afternoon." Yemisi greeted as got closer to Ajay who was still seated in her car.
"Afternoon dear. Abeg ehh, do you know Oga Fejiro?" Yemisi nodded affirmative in reply, "I am looking for his house. Can you help me?" Yemisi stared at Ajay totally surprised because it was the first time any woman would ever ask to see Fejiro and even more, a woman of a high class.
"Aunty, I'll help you o but its not for free." Yemisi shrugged, stretching her palm towards Ajay. Ajay happily brought out a two hundred naira note and placed it in Yemisi's palm. However, Yemisi didn't bulge. She only stared at the money like it was a useless piece of paper.
"What?" Ajay asked completely stunned. Yemisi's silence was all the answer she needed. Ajay reluctantly dipped her hand into her purse and brought out an extra mint five hundred naira note and placed it in Yemisi's hand. Yemisi gave out a satisfying smile as she tucked the money into one of the pockets of her shabby dress.
"Ehen.... Aunty, na the house be that." Yemisi said pointing at the wooden door just opposite where Ajay stopped her car. She started running away immediately sensing Ajay's upcoming anger.
"Come, this girl......" Ajay yelled in realization that she had been duped of her dearest mint five hundred naira but Yemisi was already long gone before she could even complete one sentence.
"Imagine this girl o." Ajay laughed, almost surprised that even a child of Yemisi's age could do something as silly as that. She shook her head, getting out of her car along with the cake. She made sure to lock her car properly before taking gentle strides toward the building. The road was not so heel-friendly so she walked as carefully as she could.
On getting to the wooden door, she gently knocked twice on the door but she got no reply. She reluctantly pushed the door open and walked inside the apartment only to find a sleeping Efosa lying lazily on the bed. Different questions ran through her mind at that moment. She was trying to place who the weird lady was. Efosa woke up scrunching her nose,
