Living in Hawaii is awesome. The weather, the people, the foods. However, there are a few scary things that have definitely put me on alert.
One, the giant centipede, which just so happened to enter our home from the sliders one morning soon after our move. They are poisonous and supposedly their sting packs a real painful punch, and varying degrees of swelling. I'm heeding my neighbors warning, and will hopefully never have first hand knowledge of these frightful looking buggers.
Two, the scorpion. Absolute terror runs through my mind just thinking about this arachnid. Yes, arachnid! Who knew? I certainly didn't. The scorpions found here are not poisonous, but they do sting, causing pain and swelling too. We've had two in the house in the few months we've lived here. Both were found in nearly the exact same spot! Hall bathroom. There was a gap of about one month between sightings.
Last night was the second scorpion close encounter. Really close. My daughter cried out in the dark after returning from our pups nightly walk. Something had run across her bare foot. She assumed it was a lizard, which are very common dwellers of our interior home space. In the dark she went grabbing for her lizard catching bag, because who doesn't have one of those handy? Her bag is conveniently kept out to catch and re-home the lizard population to the woods near our home. As she turned on the hall light, it was to find that a scorpion had crossed her foot. Not the harmless lizard.
Scorpion
Freshly planted to spot where I stand
An operatic, bloodcurdling scream
With stealth turn armored body, tail curled
Watch you scurry in faded moonbeam
Instincts collide, you belong outside
Deliver death blow while I blaspheme
That was my scream, another lets lose
Thoughts of an arachnid free daydream
