Chapter 29
When Harry opened her eyes, it took a while for her to focus on anything, she still felt pretty drowsy, again she had no idea of time or how long she had been passed out for. Her mouth was so dry and felt like she needed a gallon of water. Harry knew she had to fight and at some point there must be an opportunity for her to do so, but she felt so drained and weak she didn't know if there was any fight left in her. Whatever Kevin had given her it was strong, and it left her feeling as if she had had several bottles of prosecco, slightly hungover but still drunk.
An image of Jason popped into her head, and she wondered if he even knew she had left or indeed was he relieved that she had? Bet he was counting his lucky stars that she was no longer an embarrassment to him. The thought of Jason brought tears to her eyes, never had she loved someone so much and never had she needed to hear his voice right at this time. Harry shook her head and closed her eyes to try and stop the room from spinning, she felt sick but there was nothing in her to be sick. Harry kept her eyes closed and focussed on Jason trying to see his face and remember the feeling of him against her. Whatever happens to her she would always remember the most wonderful time of her life when she was with him.
It didn't take long for Barry to drive the van through the night streets of Essex and soon they were parked up near Kevin's flat. There were small groups of hoodies hanging around, some with their jeans worn down by the knees, or they may as well have been. Barry got out first, then Jason (who had been menacingly quiet the entire journey) and lastly Chris. Barry opened the back of the van and without any words handed out baseball bats. They were seen but nobody seemed to take any notice as if this was a common sight on the estate; three burley guys walking through an estate with baseball bats at night. Barry led the way up the concrete steps to the flat.
Jason banged on the door heavily, there was no answer, he banged again, nothing.
"Out the way," Barry pushed Jason aside, "wouldn't want you hurting your pretty self." Barry winked at Jason, who just looked at him. It didn't take much to push the door in, Barry almost fell in, it gave in that easily. The flat was bathed in darkness. Jason, Chris and Barry walked through shouting as they went. Jason found a light switch. The flat was empty, it wasn't the tidiest of flats. There was no sign of life, "for fuck sake... I really thought she'd be here." Jason smacked the nearest thing with his bat out of frustration.
"Keep looking you never know there might be something that will tell us more," Chris spoke as he picked up papers from the floor and sifted through them. Jason walked through the flat it only had two bedrooms, the one where Harry had been before and one that Kevin must have used. Once inside Jason flicked on another light switch, he wasn't quite prepared for what he saw. The walls were plastered with photos of Harry, from shopping to working, walking in the street, a picture of Jason and Harry. The entire room was like an obsessive shrine. Jason stood and stared at the photos never had he seen anything like it.
"Oh my God ... what a nutter!" Barry and Chris had joined Jason in the bedroom, all three stood there staring at the walls.
"Maybe there's something in these photos?" Chris stepped forward and took a closer look at each one.
"I think it's time we called the police." Barry said taking out his phone, Jason stopped him before he could dial any numbers.
"We will, just give us a minute to look and think, before we call."
Chris took a photo off the wall, "where were you when this was taken?" he handed the photo to Jason, who took it.
"A safe house, or at least I thought it was, it's in the Peaks, I rented it after her stay in hospital." Jason moved to where Chris had taken the photo from there a few others taken of the cottage and of Jason and Harry. Taking them off the wall, it was Chris that noticed that there was something written on the back of one of the pictures, he took it off Jason and turned it round for him to see. One word was written on the back, 'home'.
