Chapter 4
The club closed at 3 in the morning, the music stopped and the lights came on. The bouncers worked their way round the floors, asking for all to leave, there were a few reluctant partygoers that weren't ready for the night to be over. The bar closed, Harry and her three colleagues, wiped the bar down, restocked for the next and they all left at 3.30. Jason waited for her, he felt bad that he called his driver at this time of the morning, but it the feeling didn't last long, he was being paid well enough to be on his beck and call.
Once outside, the weather was freezing, Harry wasn't exactly equipped for the cold morning air. There were still large groups of stragglers around singing, shouting and some still determined to keep the dancing going.
Once outside Jason without thought placed his arm around her shoulders as he guided her through the traffic of people, she fitted perfectly against him, he felt a rush of something that he hadn't felt before. It felt perfectly natural for her to be with him, there was something about her that stirred up feelings within him, a deep primeval instinct that he was solely here on this planet just to protect her.
A car came screeching up the street, music playing loudly a heavy beat drummed through the car, and echoed out on to the street. Jason didn't know why but he felt uneasy, and sure that something wasn't right. Just as he looked up something of a flash caught his eye from the car window, without thinking Jason threw Harry to the ground as he covered her entirely with his own body, there were several rapid loud bangs, people started screaming, running and shouting in panic. The car didn't stop , the shots ceased as it continued on it's way. Once Jason was sure the car had gone, he lifted off Harry, "What on earth?" Harry whispered, clearly confused, "was that gun shots?"
"I think so, you ok?" Jason stood and lifted her to her feet. Harry looked down at herself as if checking for injury.
There was an air of frenzied fear in the crowd as people looked to each other for answers trying to figure out what just happened. Suddenly there were more screams of horror. Within seconds a police sirens rang out and blue lights flashed as they raced each other to get to where the incident happened.
"Let's get out of here," Jason didn't want to get caught up in the questions, besides what went on was nothing to do with them, it couldn't possibly be anything to do with them. Once the police got there he'd only have answer awkward questions and tell the truth of who he really was and he wasn't ready for Harry to know. He wasn't ready for the world to know yet.
Jason grabbed Harry's hand and pulled her to her feet, he didn't give her time to catch her breath or speak as he guided her across the street to the car where he had arranged to be picked up. He flung open the car door and kind of unceremoniously shoved Harry in. "Alright gov?" Jason thought it was the most the driver had actually ever said to him.
"Yeah, just get us out of here," Jason looked to Harry who was very quiet, still bewildered by what had just happened. Jason kept quiet but searched for her hand in the darkness and found it, he held it tight.
They were soon back on their close, it was dark and it was so quiet, no lights from the houses were on. Jason opened Harry's door, their lift left. "You ok? You want a nightcap or something" Jason asked, he was concerned the only light was from the streetlamp but he could see she looked pale and confused. He was still buzzing with the adrenaline and couldn't quite believe himself what had just happened, it had been like being on one of his film sets, except the shots fired weren't blanks and none of it was choregraphed or directed.
"Ummm nah, I think I just need my bed, I don't think I've ever been through anything like this, it's bonkers, just plain madness!" Harry shook her head, "I'm gonna have a wine and go bed, I just want to sleep this away. And... " Harry looked up into Jason's face, "thanks again, you must be like my guardian Angel or something? Would you believe me, if I said usually my life is very dull?"
Jason laughed quietly, "Or something..." Jason was smiling. There is was that amazing smile, he flashed his brilliant white teeth. There was an awkward moment, neither of them knew how to say goodbye, or seemed to want to. Harry stepped up on her tip toes and taking him quite by surprised kissed him full on the lips. It was meant to be a quick kiss, a 'thankyou' for everything kiss, and that's how it started it out, but it changed into something deeper and more needy. Harry circled her hands round to the back of his neck, Jason's arms gathered around her and pulled her closer holding her to him, she fitted perfectly against him.
Harry moved away first, "wow, wasn't expecting that!" She whispered against him, "don't take this the wrong way, but that was amazing!"
"I didn't think girls say things like that."
"I'm not your ordinary girl, in fact it's a bit of a curse, I pretty much say things before thinking and then it's too late, sometimes I'm surprised by what comes out."
Jason didn't let her go, he wasn't ready to, "I think I'm figuring that out, I suppose I should let you go?"
"Yes I suppose you should, or things could change or..."
"Or what?" Jason was curious to see where she thought they could end up?
"Let's just say, maybe it's a bit too soon, and you could be the type of guy of once you've got it... that's it ... your gone! Besides I really am not that type of girl," it felt perfectly right to have Harry in his arms. There was an electric chemistry buzz between them that neither of them spoke about but they both knew it was there. "I really should go..." Harry whispered against his lips but she made no attempt to leave the safety of his arms. "I suppose you could come in for one nightcap, just ... you know....?"
"I could," Jason wasn't ready for her to leave his arms or have the warmth of her body leave his.
Harry turned and led him by the hand to her house only a few steps away. She opened the door and by the time they were in the hall way they were kissing fervently, all thoughts of a nightcap completely forgot as they fumbled with each others clothes. They made it to the sofa and fell down together. All Jason could think about was having her and taking her to the highest place of bliss ever, feeling her and having her body and soul. It would be perfect he knew it would be but ... it wouldn't be would it? Jason stopped it took every ounce of strength he had "we shouldn't," Jason heard himself saying it, every part of his body was screaming against his own words.
"Ummm, ok..." Harry stopped too, he could tell she was completely confused and just has caught in the passion of the moment as he was.
"It's not you ..."
Harry stood up from him and buttoned up her jeans, "yeah I know, it's not you it's me. You'd better leave." Harry was hurt, confused and looked utterly rejected.
"Please you have to understand," Jason wanted to explain everything, he wanted to tell her that who he really was, that he couldn't make love to her, knowing that he had a girlfriend, he had to make things right, otherwise they would start on a course or relationship built on lies and he for some reason even though he'd only known her a short time, already she was beginning to mean so much to him. But God did he want her, there and now.
"Just go Jason," Harry moved away and turned her back to him.
Jason stood and moved to touch her shoulder but he knew she only reject him, he'd hurt her, and that was the last thing he wanted to do.
Jason turned and left. Once in his own home he searched for the whisky, he planned to drink at least until felt numb and could forget how his body was still feeling. Tomorrow, he would feel different he will forget Harry, call Guy and go back to LA, he was no good for Harry, this wasn't his life, he was just play acting. They were two different people from two different worlds, one day he'd have to return to his and Harry would stay in hers.
