Elsie Granger

My long night's sleep was cut off when Norah began shaking my shoulders, "We have defense against the dark arts this morning!"

"Five more minutes," I begged.

"If you sleep any longer, you'll be late."

I sprung from my bed and frantically got myself ready for class. I attempted to fix my hair but I haven't washed it in a few days so it was hard to style. In desperation to get out the door, I threw it up into a messy bun.

Once I was dressed and my bag was packed, I rushed out of my room and ran through the common room. Some students were lounging around as I swept by.

Lucky.

After my slight jog to the DADA room, I was finally able to catch my breath as I took a seat. Professor Snape was teaching defense against the dark arts this year.

Norah was already sitting in a seat beside Enzo and they appeared to be in deep conversation. All seats were full except for one.

The one beside Draco Malfoy.

Nobody else wanted to sit beside him, but because I was late, I had no choice.

Snape walked in the room and told me to take a seat before he could begin his discussion.

Across the room I spotted Harry sitting beside my sister and the way that they looked at each other was sickening. It was as if they were in love or something.

Gross.

He was slouching in his chair and looked to be in an awful mood.

Harry had previously told me about the whole fiasco with his parents and Snape, and I had to hold back my snarkiness and attitude to comfort him. I genuinely felt bad for everything he had gone through and there were plenty more obstacles ahead of him.

Sometimes I would join him on his trips to Hogsmeade where we would sit and talk while drinking butterbeer.

Professor Snape began the discussion by talking about his expectations from us, followed by the curriculum we would be discussing this year.

Draco sat beside me, fidgeting with his rings and the sleeves of his shirt the entire class. I really need to learn to wake up on time so I don't have to sit next to him anymore.

Before class ended, Snape decided to make a game of trivia for us all.

"Whoever you're sitting next to will be your trivia partner."

Great.

"What is the boggart banishing spell and what is key for it to work?" he asked the room.

We all began whispering to our partner before the small timer went off.

"Potter," he spoke in a tone as if he expected Harry to be wrong with his answer.

"Riddikulus, and you need to imagine a humorous situation as well," Harry muttered semi confidently.

"Correct," Professor Snape sighed and rolled his eyes slightly.

During the rest of the class, Snape overlooked Harry and instead would call on my sister or some other random student to answer.

"Malfoy," he picked from a list.

Draco and I looked up from our hands which we had both been fidgeting with to see his eyes piercing into his.

"What did you and Granger come up with?"

"Um, Sir," he paused, "I wasn't paying attention."

"Anybody else?" he questioned.
