Elsie Granger

"A seventh-year Slytherin student, Peter has been kidnapped in exchange for one of you." She spoke in a saddened tone, "Miss Granger."

The room of people's eyes quickly looked from Minerva to me and I could feel the words they wanted to say so badly. Maybe Snape was already planning how to get his little messenger back and how to get rid of me. It's because I'm muggle-born and in Slytherin, something not many people supported.

Snape was ready to expel me from the moment the sorting hat yelled "Slytherin!" when it was placed upon my head. Not a single muggle-born has been sorted into Slytherin since then and for decades before me, there wasn't either.

"W-what?" I stuttered as I was caught so abruptly, "Why me?"

"We do not know," She avoided eye contact with any of us, "It was written with paint on the corridor wall this morning."

Out of everything I could have imagined, this was not one of them. "Somebody wants me in exchange for Peter? The same Peter that has been running secret errands for Severus? Why did you need a book so badly last night?" I spat.

"Why does that matter? Students' lives are more valued than Professors." He added.

"We will not be exchanging Miss Granger, that is absurd." Her mood lightened only slightly, "What errands was Peter running for you, Severus? Ones that you couldn't do yourself?"

"I left a potion book in the common room."

"Were you brewing potions in the common room? Why was your book in the common room?" I asked, showing little respect.

He had no answer and nobody else in the room did either.

"If Severus was the last to see Peter, he will be the one to get him back."

We were dismissed from the meeting after other professors put their input into the situation. Today was my first day of teaching, she wasn't going to surrender me just yet. On the way to the Slytherin common room, Snape followed behind me, though he walks much faster than me and slowed down on purpose.

"If you want to surrender me, you'll have to find some other opportunity, I just got here." Just before entering the common room, the stairs moved and left Snape in another path. Thank Merlin.

Inside, students of all ages sat on the sofas and chairs, hungry and waiting to be allowed out. Snape had instructed the prefects to keep all students in and I was the one to dismiss them. They arranged themselves in a line starting and ending with prefects.

All houses were being led to the great hall for the first breakfast of the year. First-year students were probably the most scared and confused as they had very little knowledge of what goes on here. Students in the seventh and sixth years were more accustomed to these things. The day went on like normal days at Hogwarts except for Snape being gone to handle business.

As he was gone, I was chosen to fill in for his DADA lessons. A class I had not done so well in. I didn't release any large animals or beasts, only talked to them about the things I had remembered. I talked about boggarts and then talked about stories I had from my time being a student. Even once class time had ended, students were begging to stay for another story. That's probably the most enjoyable DADA lesson these students will ever get.

Some students even recognized me as the girl who worked at the wand shop. I had recognized some of the students who had been customers as well. I know every wand I've ever sold and to whom.

By the end of the day, word had gotten around to students that Peter was missing- he was not abducted, just missing. Snape had arrived back and dinner and so did Peter. "Locked himself in a cupboard without his wand or any way to get out," Snape said. The students believed his story, though the professors knew it was not true. The boy was bright, he would not have done such stupid things.
