It wasn't my fault. I was just minding my own business, practicing my elemental magic, when all of a sudden... the demon came out of nowhere and attacked me! So yeah, the fact that downtown Brooklyn caught fire wasn't my fault. I try to have a normal life, but Elementals like me, we constantly have all kinds of demons and other nasties hunting us. Granted, I'm not exactly a normal elemental. But we'll get to that later. I tried to help put out the fire with my water magic, but since I'm just a kid, they ushered me away. They couldn't see that I was using magic. Regular people's brains have issues seeing that kind of stuff. Even my parents, who don't have magic, have some problems seeing when I do magic. Which is probably for the best, to be honest. Being a kid and all, I do some pretty stupid stuff with my magic. Although, having water powers can be very helpful when you try to cook ramen noodles home alone, and forget they are on the stove. But, being a special circumstance elemental, I also have fire magic. Which is why I love camping. I just need to keep the fire under control, which is why it is convenient to have water magic as well. I am one of the only people who has more than one power, other than my best friend, Aeolus Gaia. Who has powers of earth and air. As far as I knew we were the only two with more than one magic type. Okay, so when it comes to elemental magic, there is, of course, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. But there are also two other types of magic, more dangerous and unpredictable. Aeolus and I each have one of these, but we don't use them. I have Shadow Magic, and he has Light magic. I have never used my shadow magic, and Aeolus has never used his light magic. They are too unpredictable. Sometimes I can feel it, trying to escape. I always push it down. I have no idea what it is capable of, and I'm not sure I want to find out. After the fire, my parents started to question me, but it soon faded from their minds. Sometimes I felt bad that my parent's could never fully understand what I could do, they knew there was something different about me, but they could never quite remember what. It was helpful when I got in trouble, I added a bit of magic into it, and they forgot about the whole thing. So now I have talked about the fact that I almost burnt down brooklyn, the types of magic, and my weird relationship with my parents. And I'm sure there is some stuff you are all wondering about. Number one is probably "What is your name?" and number two is probably "What is it like having two powers that are opposite of each other warring within you?" Well, thank you for asking, to answer question number two, I can't really feel it, but occasionally, instead of fire or water, I get steam. As for question number one, that is a mystery. Maybe I will tell you later in the story, I haven't decided yet. After my parents gave up trying to remember if there was something they were supposed to be mad about, I went to my room and video called Aeolus. The holographic screen filled with his angry face.
"What did you do?" he asked
"He started it." I responded calmly
"Who?"
"The demon." And, just because I talk so calmly about demons does not mean they aren't something you should worry about. They are very dangerous.
"What kind was it?" He was a little calmer now. He brushed his tousled, stark white hair out of his face.
"Bad, fiery."
"Well no duh." his tone was angry, but his ice blue eyes betrayed him, he was trying not to laugh. His eyes, that was one of the weird things about him. They seemed to glow light blue.
"I don't pay attention to what kind of demon it is, I just kick it's butt before it can hurt anyone." he sighed.
"Are you okay?"
"Water extinguishes fire." I reminded him, summoning a small stream of water.
"You didn't answer the question."
"Aeolus, I'm fine, this isn't my first demon."
"I know, it's just, you need to be more careful, I saw you on the news, trying to help put out the fire, and I think folks will start getting suspicious that there is something going on, this isn't the first fire you've tried to help put out. The cameras only show you standing close to it, watching. But if people see you near too many fires, they are going to think you started them."
"It's fine," I said. For some reason, I was starting to get defensive, and a little annoyed. "Regular people forget all of that kind of stuff, remember. I will be fine." Aeolus sighed again, which over our many years of friendship, I had learned was a sign of surrender.
"Fine, just be careful. Your parents?"
"Are you really going to ask every time? You already know the answer."
"Sorry, force of habit." he opened his mouth to ask another question, but I already knew what it was, so I answered it before he could even get the words out.
"No, I didn't use my shadow magic." he laughed
"Sorry. I guess I am pretty predictable, huh?"
"Yes. So you are the supposed opposite of your light magic."
"What do you mean?" his tone changed slightly, he could tell where this conversation was going, and he didn't like it.
"We were told it was unpredictable and dangerous, but do we really know that?"
"How many times are we going to have this conversation?"
"Until I get tired of it."
"The Elders said-"
"I don't care what they said, what if the light and shadow magic can help?"
"Do you really want to risk it?"
"What would we risk if they aren't dangerous?"
"Think about what we are risking if they are dangerous."
"I really want to test it out... but where is a safe place to do it?"
"Nowhere Serena, just let it be."
"I know where, I'm going to find the most remote place in the woods, I'm leaving tomorrow at dawn. You can come if you want. I leave at the crack of dawn."
"Serena wait-" I hung up the video call.
