Josh’s POV:
“So let me get this straight. An announcer will say to go to the same area for a group photo, then I’ll pull Jen to the side and the beach music will start?” I ask Erin. She nods. “Then voila! You’ll propose, the world will love you two, and you’ll be happy.” She says. “Now, when do you want this to happen in terms of date and time? We’ve got to plan it, you know.” I sigh. Hmm…
Jen’s POV:
I check the clock. 5:30. Josh should be home by now! Where is he? I figure he’ll be home soon, so I decide to start dinner. I’m no cook, like at all, but I’ll try.
I put a few veggies in a frying pan and decide to try to make stir fry. I put the stove on a medium heat, add some oil, and sit on the couch with the TV still on from before. Josh’s kitchen is visible from the living room, so I decide to just chill and watch the pan sizzle from here. Before I know it, I feel my eyes get heavy from the warmth of the room, and I’m asleep.
I’m woken up by the sound of Josh calling from the entrance. “Jen! I’m home.” He pauses for a minute. “Jen, do you smell something burning?” My eyes dart open when I remember the vegetables on the stove. I check the clock. 5:45. I look over to the kitchen to see grey smoke coming from the frying pan. I curse under my breath as I dash over to the stove, grab one of the oven mitts and rush the pan over to the sink. I hear Josh come in behind me. I look behind me as I turn the cold water on to see a frozen, shocked Josh behind me. I expect Josh to be all smiling and joking around about it, but instead his face flashes with anger.
“Jen, how did this happen? He asks coldly. “I’m sorry, Josh. I fell asleep!” He rolls his eyes. “Alright, well let’s open some windows when it’s freezing cold out.” I look at him in a way to ask for sympathy, but he glances at me coldly before going to open some windows. I now realize how much it smells like smoke. “Josh, I’m really sorry.” I tell him again. “Whatever.” He responds flatly. “Josh, this isn’t like you. What’s going on with you?” I ask. “It’s just… I can’t leave you alone for a few hours without nearly burning my house down! I’ve spent a long time being by your side 24/7 and now when I go to leave for a few hours to…” He pauses. “...do some errands, you nearly burn down the house!” I bury my face in my hands. “I was just trying to make some dinner for us when you came home, I….” I stop talking when I notice he’s quiet.
“I’ll just leave, Josh. I’m sorry.” Before he says anything, I grab my bag and my jacket and I don’t even put my jacket on before walking off into the frigid late winter air. I flick a single tear out of my eye as I climb into my car, beginning what feels like the longest drive down the street to my house in history.
