Jen’s POV:
I wake up the morning of possibly the biggest day of my life. My arm slides over to the other side of the bed to reach over to Josh, but then I realize that the bride and groom typically sleep separately the night before the wedding day. He’s at his house.
Looking at the time, I realize that Jena and Elizabeth are supposed to come over to my house in a few hours to help me get ready. I walk downstairs, grab a strawberry Pop Tart and brush my hair while the Pop Tart is in the toaster. After my Pop Tart has been fully devoured, my stomach starts churning. It is at this moment that I realize how nervous I actually am. This morning is the very last morning I will ever be Jennifer Lawrence. That is, if everything goes to plan. In my head, I repeat my name that is going to be my name at the end of the day.
Jennifer Hutcherson.
It has a really nice ring to it, I realize. Kind of reminds me of Jennifer Hudson a little bit. Maybe that could be a conversation starter between us one day or something.
After a quick shower, watching TV and jamming out to some music for a while, my doorbell rings.
Liz smiles and says “Well… Take it all in. This is sacred ground. History… was made here.” Imitating her Effie hand gestures. I grin at her and say “You’ll get used to the smell.” There’s a laugh from all three of us. “Come on in you guys.” I tell them. “Make yourselves at home.” They hang up their sweatshirts and take off their shoes, Jena revealing her mismatching socks. “It’s a big, big, big day!” Jena says. “What, are we just talking in Effie quotes now?” I ask. We laugh.
I look down at the floor. I’m really happy that Jena and Liz are here, but the only person I really want to talk to is Josh. I know it’s only been one night that we’ve been away from each other, but I want to be with him on the morning of this special day. I ask the girls if I could call him at least, and they agree. I grab my phone and FaceTime him.
“Hello?”
Just hearing his voice makes my stomach feel like it has butterflies. Luckily, I’m on speaker, so Jena and Liz say “Hey Josh!” and help me lead into the conversation. “Hey, guys! Did you steal Jen’s phone or something, Jena?” He asks. I laugh. “No, Joshy. I’m here, I’m just lost in my thoughts running a million miles an hour.” I respond. He chuckles a little. “Same here, baby. Today’s a big, big, big, day!” He says, mimicking Effie’s voice the best he can with a dude’s voice. Liz laughs. “You would’ve made a perfect Effie, Josh.” We laugh.
“Is your prep team here, Peeta?” I ask him teasingly. “My PREP TEAM decided to get some breakfast before they came to my house. So no.” He laughs. “Sam, Liam and Connor should be here soon though.” I scoff. “How come you get 3 people to help you? All you have to do is comb your hair and put on a suit. I have to do my nails, my hair, my makeup, my dress…” I protest. He sighs with a little laugh. He’s laughing a lot today, I guess. Must be nervousness too. “I dunno. Connor wanted to help his big brother I guess. So I was like, why not, you know?” Just as he finishes this sentence, his doorbell rings in the background. “One second, guys.” He says. I hear movement in the background, and the small squeak of his front door opening.
My mind continues to race a million miles an hour, and I think of the time that Josh recorded that cover for Thinking Out Loud. I start humming it as I think all the way back to the first movie we ever did together. Never in a million years would I have guessed that five years from that point, I’d be marrying the boy who so brilliantly played the beloved boy with the bread.
Josh picks up his phone and points it to the three gentlemen walking in the door. Liam and Sam I recognize, and I assume that the third dude walking in is Josh’s little brother. “Say hi, little bro.” Connor smiles at the camera and says “Hi, little bro!” Connor laughs and Josh makes a teasing sound of annoyance. “I swear, Con, if I didn’t have this phone in my hand…” Connor grins. He puts his face closer to the camera and says, “Hi, Jennifer!” I smile at him and say “Hey there, Connor!” Sam and Liam come up behind Connor and wave sheepishly at the camera, which makes me laugh.
"Alright, baby. I’m gonna let you hang with the dudes for a while and mentally prepare yourself for marrying an insane lady.” Josh laughs. “Alright. I’ll see you soon, baby. Love you.” He says. “Love you!” I respond, and give him a kiss over the phone. He gives a little wave and a smile before the FaceTime ends.
Liz smiles. “Now then. What do you say we get to work?” She suggests. I smile and nod, and the process begins.
I brush through my hair as Jena works on my toenails (and yes, she actually painted my toenails. She made me clip them first though, which is understandable.) Then, Jena puts these adorable pre-painted fake nails on my fingers over my short, uneven ones. They’re mostly clear, with white on the top and little silver dots and flowers and they’re really cute.
Then comes the almighty dress, with white flowery lace on the bottom half. It has these pretty elegant shoulder parts, which exposes the top of my shoulder and shrouds the lower section of my shoulders. White feathers go around the bottom edge of the dress, and the lace is sprinkled in sparkles.
Jena and Liz gasp. “Jennifer. Oh my goodness, you look…” Jena whispers. Liz chirps, “Flawless!”
I turn and look in the mirror and gasp. This is amazing.
Jena starts working on my hair, adding long curls while Liz touches up on my makeup. I take another look in the mirror and twirl ad smile at myself as my friends smile behind me.
When there’s downtime, I sneak down to the kitchen and grab a wine glass. I pour myself some wine and take a sip just as Liz and Jena spot me. “Jennifer. You’ll get to drink plenty tonight!” Jena protests. I sigh. “I know, I’m just scared half to death.” Liz sighs. “Well getting drunk before walking down the aisle is not a smart move. Trust me.” I laugh. “Fine. Let’s just chill then.” I tell them, taking one final big sip of the wine before leaving it in the sink.
