I stare down at her tiny pink fingers, and reach my hand down to let them wrap around one of mine. Josh does the same with the boy, and we both coo at our new babies, whose eyes aren't even open yet. They're so small, so soft. The sensation of finally being able to hold them in my arms is completely indescribable. Josh steps out of the room for a moment to call his mother, who apparently had arrived in town in anticipation for the twins' arrival. He went back into the room with a sigh and a soft laugh. "What?" I ask, grinning. "She was waiting at our house. She had no idea the twins were already here." I smile, but shrug my shoulders. "Well to be honest Josh, did we know?" "True."
Sophia starts wiggling around in her plastic crib, her eyes still shut. My look of joy suddenly shoots to concern, and I tap him on the shoulder to get his attention away from Ryan. "Josh, what is Sophia doing?" He looks at her for a moment, watching her as her little eyes start to squint. "Jen, I think she's trying to open her eyes!" I make a squealing noise as I watch our girl. "Come on, Sophie! You can do it!" Josh whispers with excitement. Suddenly, he freezes, as he registers what he is witnessing.
Hazel on hazel.
Her eyes are a mirror image of her fathers, and Josh gasps. His fingers start to cover his lips as he approaches her crib, his own eyes growing slightly glossy. "Hey, baby girl! You opened your eyes. I'm your daddy, and welcome to the big wide world." I smile as I hear him coo to her about how big the planet is, and how much time and life experiences she has ahead of her. Already I can tell that Josh is going to be an amazing father.
Almost as if he wants to steal the spotlight, Ryan starts squinting his eyes in the same fashion that Sophia did. "Come on, Ryan!" I whisper, trying not to snap Josh out of his moment with our daughter. He makes a little baby noise, and his eyes open to reveal a beautiful cerulean shade. It's not exactly like mine, but it's pretty damn close. "Hi there! You're such a beautiful little boy. I'm your mommy. I know this world has a lot to take in, but you'll fit in just fine." Out of the corner of my vision, I see Josh's head look over in my direction. "I knew it." He whispered, kissing my temple and standing back as if to admire the view. "God, they're beautiful." "Well, they're half of you, Joshy." He chuckles. "Half of you too, Jenny Lou."
The nurse comes in with some paperwork for us to fill out. Since there's two babies, I take on the task of Ryan's paperwork and Josh takes on Sophia's. We're just about done scribbling down information when a nurse walks in with Josh's mother and brother. Josh stands up to greet them and I offer them hugs as well. Michelle walks over to the little plastic cribs. "Time to meet my little grandbabies!" A pause. "Grandbabies... Oh my goodness, I'm OLD!" She teases. "My babies are having babies!" She hugs Josh again and he laughs. "Not me, mom." Connor adds from the corner of the room. She turns to look at him. "Well you better not until you're married! You're only twenty!" We all start laughing before Michelle walks back over to the kids.
"Oh, you two... They're so tiny! They're so precious!" Josh and I beam at each other proudly. "What did you name them?" Josh walks over to his mother and points to the babies. "Sophia Rose and Ryan Parker." She nods. "Very nice names. Who came up with the middle name Parker?" I point to Josh and he points to himself, both of us starting to giggle as we remember that day's conversation. "Parker? That's badass, dude." Connor says. "I came up with it myself... dude." "Dude!" "Dude." "Joshy." "Boys!" There's a moment of silence. Josh goes over to Sophia and grabs her hand, lifting up her arm and imitating a baby voice. "Sophia!" The hospital room erupts in laughter.
It's hard to believe that practically seven years ago I considered Josh Hutcherson to be an acquaintance. We had only spoken a couple of times, and we didn't really develop any sexual feelings towards each other until Catching Fire. I look around the room now and realize that this was bound to happen eventually. I look at the smiling faces of my husband's family all bonding over our children and realize that we're all connected. Even though there will be rough times, I'm ready to take them on. After all, I know that this family will be there to support Josh and I.
After all, it's Kentucky against the world, right?
