The days go on though but it feels like I was running out of time. We only had to hope that it would work but I am putting a lot of faith into something that was both destroyed and man-made.
I fear that my wish would go unheard. That when we pass this life, we will never meet again.
Due to that fear I have been working harder and harder to find a way to the root. More and more days I have had Jeanne come with me to work because I knew I was going to work late and I didn't want to leave her alone.
Some nights she falls asleep clinging to me and other nights she keeps me company till one in the morning.
Yet I feel so far from reaching the Root.
Stepping into the office of one of the higher-ranked mages I set down my papers, "Considering you guys couldn't tell she is pregnant and that her days of going into labour is near, here is the evidence on paper that the inflated stomach is in fact due to a child and not snacks."
He gives me a pained stare, "You know how it works."
"Strange what you can achieve when you use your eyes," I narrow my own at him, "Here, read them. Make sure everything is in order because I won't be responding to any of you fuckers."
"I know you are angry but this is just standard procedure and you surely aren't making it easier for us to help you," he then grabs the papers, after a short read, "These are good."
I nod, "Thanks."
He then calls after me, "(Y/N)."
"Hmm?" I stop in my tracks.
"Good luck to you and your wife and congratulations," he smiles at me warmly.
"Thank you," I return the smile at him, before letting it falter as I leave.
It would have meant a lot more if you assholes didn't make my life so hard. I have given you so much research and knowledge of the Grail and how the Root operates only for you to push me to give you more.
When I find the Root. You will never know how to reach it, I will make sure of that.
I head straight to my office, burning unimportant papers and take the rest I need to continue this research at home with me. They won't find much here and they won't be able to continue it without me.
I know they will try to take it from me, to use my life's work for their own benefit. I was going to play nice but there is just more reason why I dislike you mages - in this world and in the previous.
Finally gathering all my research notes I leave this place. I will be back in like a month from now. I have done enough to cover my own ass and to prevent them from bothering me during this vacation.
The signs are there, it is only a matter of time before I have to get her to the hospital. I still don't understand much about it but we are driving her tomorrow in preparation. Then she needs to stay there until she gives birth.
I don't know if it is a thing where we can just take the child and run home - too many details to care about at once. I am just hoping that this goes off without any problems.
Stepping through the front door, I drop my stuff near the entrance as I turn into the living room, "Hey beautiful."
She smiles at me, "It is so boring having to sit here and do absolutely nothing."
I lower myself next to her, gently resting my hand on her stomach, "Just for a little while longer," I kiss her on the cheek, "Are you okay?"
She nods, "Better now that you are here," she then rests her hand on mine, "I think we may have to... you know... go to the hospital tonight. Rather be safe because we are pretty close."
I nod, "Should we go now?"
She chuckles, "You usually know so much and now you are like a little child trying to understand but you just can't... let's just stay here for a few hours. You just came from work."
I shake my head, "Safety first. Just start screaming if your water breaks."
"It isn't painful..."
"I mean just as a precaution. Then I know to just run you to the hospital right?"
She chuckles weakly, "You are adorable. Will you visit me?"
"Stupid question. I will probably end up sleeping on the floor if they would allow me to."
She glares at me, "Don't make it any more painful for them. You have been having a short fuse lately."
I lower my head with a sigh, "I know."
She shuts her eyes as she leans against me, "It will be fine. Okay? You worry to much and you have been getting worked on the smallest things. I hope you are not going to work on your vacation..."
I furrow my brow, "I did plan on it."
She giggles, "I knew you were going to. I won't let you though..."
I smile at her, "Sorry. I will try to keep away from it."
She lifts her other hand, holding her hand against my cheek I rest my head into her hand with shut eyes, "I know how you feel. I know that you are scared that the Grail may not have answered your wishes but... we will be fine. We managed to get through that so we will get through this and what comes next. Okay?"
I nod, "I love you."
"I love you too. At least this time you won't end up killing yourself."
