"I can't believe we go to school in two days."
Since Lola left, they've just been cuddling. It was nice and quite until Clay spoke up.
"I can't, either. I'm really nervous."
"It'll be ok. We have each other."
"I know, but it'll take a while to get used to."
"I know it will."
"So I've been thinking..." George starts.
"About what?" Clay wonders.
"Us."
"What does that mean?" The blond starts to panic silently.
"What are we gonna do after school? Like, what if you get a scholarship to a college?"
"George, no matter what happens, I will not let it split us apart. We'll both get into great colleges."
"What if I don't want to go to college?" George mumbles.
"What?" Clay sits up since he had still been laying on George. George sits up, too.
"I don't know, I've just- I don't know."
"George, you've been wanting to go to college since I've known you."
"Things change."
"I don't understand."
"I'm not doing baseball this year." George ignores Clay's confusion.
"George, what are you on about? Literally a few months ago you were stressing because you thought you wouldn't be able to do baseball anymore. What's up with you?"
"It's not my thing anymore, I guess."
"I'm so confused."
"Why? It's simple. I don't want to play baseball this year."
"No, I understand that. I don't understand why. It's not something you just don't want to do when you've been working your ass off for it. You were the best player on the team, I don't understand, George." Clay looks up to see tears in George's eyes.
"Baby, what's wrong? Come here." Clay opens his arms and George leans into him. "Hey, calm down. I've got you."
"I'm sorry." George whispers.
"Do you wanna talk about it?"
"No."
Instead of answering, Clay just pulls George closer. Clay is feeling tired, but he fights sleep to comfort George. The tears slowly stop and turn into gentle snores. Once George is sleeping, Clay takes it upon himself to follow.
--
"Boys, wake up." Clay wakes up to a gentle voice at the door.
"What time is it?" Clay asks his mom. George woke up to Clay stretching.
"It's seven."
"It's really that late?"
"I let you boys sleep a little later than I wanted to, but dinner is made and ready for when you're hungry. I suppose you come up now, but like I said, it's ready for whenever."
"Ok, thanks. We'll be up soon." George managed to fall back asleep during this conversation. Clay frowned at the puffy eyed boy before waking him up again.
"Hey, Baby." Clay gently shook him. "Let's go eat dinner."
"I'm not hungry." He mumbles.
"You need to eat. Come on."
"Just eat without me." The brunet flips over.
"Are you sure?"
"Mmm."
"Ok. I'll be back soon."
Clay was hungry, so he got up and went to eat. He shut his door to leave George in peace before going to the kitchen.
"Where's George?" Clay's mom asks when Clay shows up in the kitchen alone.
"He's not hungry."
"Ok. Well there's plenty of food left. We already ate."
Clay goes to the sink and washes his hands. His mom made spaghetti and meatballs, so Clay grabbed a bowl and dished up. He felt weird sitting at the table without George. Speaking of George, the blond couldn't stop thinking about him.
What was his deal? Clay was extremely worried. Baseball meant so much to George, and college has been a dream of his since as long as Clay could remember. And no offense to George, but when was he not hungry? He never skipped a meal. Maybe he'll just eat later.
"Hey, Clay?"
"Yeah?"
"So, I wanted to talk to the both of you, but you can just tell George later."
"Ok?"
"So tomorrow is that last day of summer."
"Yeah."
"Well, your father and I are taking you all out for some fun before you start school."
"That'll be nice. Where are we going?"
"A couple different places, but it's a surprise."
"Ok. I'll tell George."
"We'll be leaving kind of early, so make sure he wakes up soon so he can sleep tonight."
"Ok."
Clay rinses his bowl out and puts his dishes in the dishwasher. He slips past his mom and makes his way back to George. He doesn't care to be quiet since George needs to wake up, anyway. George is definitely going to hate Clay after this, but Clay doesn't care.
"George! Wake up!" Clay shouts when he opens the door.
But that isn't it. If that didn't scare George, the thing Clay is about to do will. Clay shuts the door as quickly as he opened it and ran and leaped onto George's small body.
"Wake uuuuuup." He drags out.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" George complains and turns away from Clay.
"You're so adorable when you're grumpy."
"Leave me alone."
"No. Wake up."
"No."
"Yes, George. We have to wake up early."
"Why?"
"My parents are taking us all to a few different places before summer ends. My mom didn't say where, though."
George felt his heart drop when Clay said that. Why, though? He loves going on trips, especially with Clay's family. He didn't feel excited, either. What was going on with him?
"Oh."
"Aren't you excited?"
"Um, yeah." George smiles a fake smile.
The rest of the night was spent cuddling, watching movies, playing games, and sleeping. George never ended up eating that night. It's almost as if he just lost all appetite he had. Clay didn't notice. He thought George was just not hungry. If any other person were to see George, they would be worried about him. It doesn't take long for Clay to pick up on it, though.
