Chapter 2: The First Day of Rehersals and Meeting More Cast Members

It was 7:00 am on Friday, February 1st, 1991. Victoria walked downstairs and into the kitchen to find Melanie finishing a cup of coffee and waiting on her.

"I can tell you overslept. Were you up late writing again," Melanie asked.
"You should be proud of me. I only stayed up until 1:30 am. But I couldn't help it. I got carried away with the revenge plot line in my novel. I couldn't decide whether the killer should put the poison in the drink or in the food. I ultimately decided to go with poison in the drink," Victoria answered.
"Well, we really have to get going or we'll be late," Melanie said.
"Okay, okay. We can go, Mel," Victoria said.

The two sisters left and headed to the studio where they would be practicing stunts, singing, and dancing until April. Melanie and Victoria walked inside the soundstage where they were greeted by the director of Newsies, Kenny Ortega, who told them to hang out for a while since it was only 8:00 am and that they wouldn't be starting for another thirty minutes. Melanie also explained to Kenny how she sprained her ankle the previous night and he told her to observe the dancing for the day until she could get to a doctor.

"Mel! Over here," Ele Keats, the girl Melanie talked to the previous night, said while gesturing for the eighteen year old to come over to her.
"Okay," she said.

"Go on. I'll be fine by myself," Victoria said as her sister walked away.

Then, Victoria felt someone tap her shoulder.

"Hey, Vic," Christian said after Victoria turned around and saw him.
"Hi, Christian," she said.
"You look tired," he said.
"I am. I only got five hours of sleep last night. It's because I was up until 1:30 am writing a story about love and revenge after you left," Victoria said.
"You're a writer," Christian asked.
"Yep. I write plays, poems, and short stories. I'm also working on a novel, which is the revenge story I told you about. I hope to publish a novel one day," Victoria replied.
"I can easily see that. Why did you decide to act in a film if writing is your passion," Christian asked.
"I just wanted to help my family out by earning some money since my dad is away for most months of the year with his job and I also needed a bit of spending money too," Victoria answered.
"Oh," Christian said.

Twenty five minutes later, in another area of the room, Melanie and Ele were talking as another cast member, Michael Goorjian, who plays Skittery in the film, walked up to them.

"Hey, Mel, right? I'm Michael if you didn't remember. We talked about the environment and climate change last night," Michael said.
"Hi, Michael. Of course I remember you fr-," she began before being cut off when Kenny got evertone's attention.

"Okay. We're going to set some ground rules and then Peggy Holmes is going to talk about dancing and lead you in some stretches and teach you some simple moves. Our Annie Conlon, Melanie Windsor, is excused from practicing with you guys and lady from now until her ankle is healed," Kenny said before he began talking about being respectful towards each other and some other rules for the cast to know about.

About five hours later, the cast members who lacked experience dancing were quite sore, particularly Victoria. She was sitting with Christian and Melanie and breathing heavily.

"You're so lucky you sprained your ankle last night," Victoria said after taking a sip of water.
"I know, but you two looked like you were having fun," Melanie said.

"Oh, shut it," Christian said as he took a sip of water.

"You two wanna get food once we're done here," Melanie asked.
"Sure," Victoria replied.

"That's fine with me," Christian said.

"Mel, you have to promise me that you won't date one of these guys or get married anytime soon," Victoria said.
"I won't because I don't intend to," she said.
"Good," Victoria said.

The rest of the day was spent learning dances. Victoria ended up getting a bit closer with Christian while Melanie ended up getting aquatinted with Michael.
