Chapter 1; What the hell is happening to me?

We're in our apartment, packing. My mother is on the phone and she's whispering. She seems worried. I stand in the hallway, holding my favourite doll, my "My little Pony" backpack is heavy on my back. My mom packed it. If feels like there's a brick in there. "Are you sure it's okay if we stay with you? It'll only be for a few days. We just need somewhere safe to lie low until he can come pick it up. Thank you, P." My mom is rifling through her closet, throwing clothes into her duffle bag. She hangs up the phone and hurries to the front door, grabbing my arm. "Mom, where are we going? Why are you so scared? Is this because of the funny man chasing us in the park?" I ask. I don't like the look in her eyes. They fill with tears as she wraps me into a tight hug. "Ellie, I'm sorry but we're going to have to stay with mommy's friend for a little while, okay? Everything will be okay, baby. I promise." She cups my cheek with her hands and sniffs. I groan and say; "Okay, but why is my bag so heavy?" My mom shoots me a panicked look. "It's just some stuff we need, honey. But just promise me that whatever you do, do not take that bag from your back or open it at any time, okay?" she says, seriously.

I sigh and hold my hand out to hers. She grabs it and we hurry down the stairs and get into a black car outside our building. My mom nods at the man driving but doesn't speak. We're driving for ages and I feel my eyes getting heavy. It's dark when I wake up and the car is stopped outside a big, white house. The yard is huge and it has trees and a barn. My mom picks me up into her arms and I yawn as we walk to the front door. A woman opens the door and smiles. She's kind of old but she's so pretty. Her hair is white but has bits of brown and she's wearing red lipstick. My mom puts me down on the porch and hugs the woman. She's crying and the woman is rubbing her back. "Sshhh, It's okay Grace. You'll be safe here." My mother nods and turns to me. "P, this is Ellie." I swallow and smile at the nice woman. She bends down and holds her hand out to me. "Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Ellie." She has a funny voice. She doesn't sound like my mom. I smile and we head inside. My mom puts me straight to bed and takes my bag out of the room with her. She leaves the door open a bit so I have some light. When she's downstairs I can hear her and the lady talking.

"He was there, P. He knew I had it. He was looking for it." My mom says. "He will never get it Grace. I've made a few calls and our people will come to pick it up when it's safe. I can't believe Howard asked you to keep it. What was he thinking? The idiot!" The other lady says. She sounds mad. "I had to. We were being watched and I wanted to try to study it some more." My mom says. She sounds sad now. My eyes are closing again and their voices get quieter and quieter.

I can hear beeping. I remember falling and hitting something hard and cold that made my body ache all over and I can't breathe. I tried to wiggle my hands but they're behind my back. I can't move. Why am I soaking wet and freezing? Open your eyes, Ellie. I can't. I start to panic. I can hear things and people around me but I'm paralyzed. What is going on? I'm hyperventilating as I see Malik's face in front of mine. He's laughing and holding a syringe. I feel a shooting pain through my body and try to scream. What happened? Where am I?

Something that feels like electricity is bubbling up in my veins. It hurts, kind of. But not really. The beeping gets louder and I can start to make out the voices around me. I wiggle my fingers and wince as Malik's eyes burn into mine. "No! No don't touch me! What are you doing?" My whole body feels like it's on fire. Something warm touches my hand but it makes me flinch and I whip it away. Light is starting to hit my eyes. It stings. My breathing is fast and heavy and the beeping is getting louder and quicker. "What's going on, Bruce?" A worried voice asks. It's right beside my head. Who is Bruce?
