Chapter 18; I have to tell her the truth

Steve

I don't want to leave her. There's something about being in this tiny room, just me and her that feels so natural and light. I can almost pretend that we're just two normal people, in love and spending time together. I can almost forget that I'm Captain America... almost.

Fury's voice blares over the intercom, bringing us back to the unwanted reality. I want to stay here, I want to ignore the feeling of dread and anxiety in my stomach. I have her back. I want to stay here and keep her safe. But I know I can't. I kiss the top of her head and leave her room, reluctantly. I know I have to go and get this asshole and get my best friend back but I just can't fight the feeling inside me that this is all wrong. It seems too easy. It feels like a trap.

I stare at myself in the mirror as I fasten the fasten my boots. Why do I feel so nervous? Loki got caught. We know where he is... that's all. He's not as clever as he thinks he is. We've found him. That's all.

I narrow my eyes at my reflection, angry at myself for trying to act so naïve. Something isn't right.

I make my way to the briefing room to meet the team. Everyone is there. Including Ellie. God she looks so beautiful in her jeans and t-shirt. Her long brown hair falls down her back in loose curls. I keep meaning to check out all the musicians she has on her t-shits. I shake my head and try to focus but grab her hand and squeeze while Tony and Fury fill us in on the plan.

"Okay, so it seems Loki is at a function in Stuttgart. He's killed several people, already and we assume he won't go down without a fight. Romanoff, you'll fly the jet with Clint. Cap and Bruce will be on board. Tony, Sam, you follow behind. We need all hands on deck here so be prepared. We've seen what this guy is capable of."

Ellie squeezes my hand and I turn to give her a re-assuring smile but that's wiped from my face immediately when I hear Ellie say; "Nick, do you want me to come along? I stopped this guy before, I want to do it again," The determination and power in her voice both admires and slightly unnerves me.

Fury grins and shakes his head. "Ms. Hart. Thank you but I think we're good. You suffered a sever head trauma in the past 24 hours. We don't want you in harms way. Oh and welcome back." He smiles but there's a look behind his eyes that makes Ellie freeze. I try not to look at her, fearful that she'll read my eyes and know that Fury isn't the only one hiding something. If she finds out the truth it'll kill her. Her past has been so traumatic, she's been through enough and Tony will kill us too.. I have to get Bucky back before....

"Sorry?" I blurt out when I realise everyone's eyes are on me. Ellie tilts her head in confusion and nods towards Fury, signalling that he was addressing me. "I said, are you ready, Captain? This is it. Time to save the world, again." I stand up, nearly upending the table as I do so. We head out to the concealed hanger and get ready to board the jet. Tony slaps me on the back pulling me from my gaze. Ellie is hugging Nat and smiling. She looks nervous. "Ready to get this fucker?" Tony snarls. I nod but don't say anything. It's unnerving to feel like this, to not be able to shake the unease that's coursing through my body. I walk over to Ellie and grab her into a tight hug, lifting her into the air. "Guess we're finished talking," Nat teases and awkwardly walks over to Sam. Ellie struggles against me for a moment but tightens her hug on me when I know she can sense the urgency behind my touch. "Steve? Are you okay?" She whispers, holding my face as I put her back onto the floor. Her gorgeous bright green eyes are wide and anxious. I open my mouth to speak but close it again, kissing her instead. I touch my lips to her perfect heart shaped, pink ones and pull her close to me. Her small but strong hands rest on my chest and I feel her sigh into the kiss.

I pull away after a minute and stare at her, hoping she looks a bit more relaxed. She doesn't. She looks even more worried. "Be careful," she whispers into my ear and I nod and turn to walk up the ramp. We're all in place. I stare out the window at her. Agent Hill has her hand on her shoulder while Ellie bites the nail of her thumb. I wink and she smiles, briefly, but it doesn't reach her eyes

The flight doesn't take long. We arrive in Germany in just under an hour. I try focus on the mission. "Cap, you ready?" Nat calls and I rise to my feet and leap out from the jet. I sprint towards the large crowd that are on their knees outside a massive building, looking for him. Something hard hits me and I'm thrown to the ground but hop back up just as I see Tony swoop in overhead. "Kneel" He hisses at me, holding my head down with his scepter. "Go to hell!" I roar and smack him as hard as I can with my shield, sending him flying back. He screams in frustration and takes to sprinting before me but Tony's there. He raises his hands and send a bolt hitting Loki square in the chest and hurtling back towards the ground. I take my place beside Tony as Sam lands effortlessly next to us. We're all poised in an attack position. "I'd think about your next move carefully there, Donnie Darko." Tony snarls. Loki grins and raises his hands in defeat. Tony yanks him up, grinning widely. "Good move." He slaps cuffs on him and leads him to the jet. I should feel happy, relieved but the knot in my stomach has grown.

"Where is the tesseract?" Tony demands as he throws Loki into a seat at the back of the jet. Silence. "Answer me!" Tony's face is an inch away from Loki's now and bright red. "I sent it away, but I do not know where." he snarls and I feel my head dropping in dread. "Liar!" Tony has Loki by the scruff of the neck now, shaking him, violently. Loki smiles and stares up at me.

A worried voice in my ear pulls me out of my uneasy thoughts. "Steve, what's happening? Are you okay?" I smile, gently. "We're good. We've secured Loki. but.." I hesitate.

"But what, Captain?" Fury's voice interjects.

I swallow the lump in my throat. "The tesseract is still missing."

"Shit." Fury replies and I slump into a seat behind Nat.

"Steve, don't worry. We'll fins it. And Buck." I look deep into Nat's eyes and hers go wide. She can sense something's off too. I know it. I need to get back to Ellie. I have to tell her the truth, before she finds out from someone else.
