I groggily open my eyes and let the last of the fading sun beams tickle my face. The memory of this morning makes my smile widen and my cheeks flush. I turn over onto my side and face an empty bed. "Steve?" I call but he's not here. I pick up my phone. 7 p.m. Shit, I slept all day! There's a text from Nat. I smirk as I open it.
Nat: "Good to have you back, El. I missed you"
I rub my face and gently slap it, trying to come to life but the hunger pangs in my stomach seem to be doing that for me. There's a knock on the door and I hop off the bed and throw on a robe that's hanging on the back of the small bathroom door.
"Tony!" I shout in happiness but I can barely get the word out before he's crushing me in a long hug. "You're back, kid! Cap just told us the good news! I knew I could count on you!" He's beaming and the lines around his tired eyes all but disappear.
"Glad to be back boss, well, if I still work for you that is?" I ask, genuinely curious and plonk myself onto the bed grimacing at the painful strain between my legs. Tony sits on a small chair near the window and crosses his arms. "Are you fucking kidding me? You're the new avenger, kid." I wince at his words, annoyed at him for pulling me out of momentarily blissful ignorance.
"Tony, no. I'm no Avenger. Shit I don't even know what this is." I look at my open palms and sigh.
He moves towards the bed and sits on the end, placing a hand on my knee. "Ellie, do you think any of us knew how to use any of our powers when we first got them? Shit, I mean look at me. Look at Banner and Rogers and Buck!" He stops at he last word, frowning. I suddenly feel a pang of guilt and shame rising in my chest and try to fight back the tears bubbling in my eyes.
"It takes time to get used to massive changes like his, kid. We were trying to go easy on you the past couple of weeks because of your fucked up brain, but now that you're back we can't get to work on really testing out these powers! Its exciting! We'll take that emo asshole out and have Bucky back in no time." I grimace at his words an care-free demeanor.
I'm silent for a few minutes, thinking hard. He's right. Now I don't have to worry about my flashbacks of Malik and the pain and confusion of not remembering... now but. Loki, Loki was there when I was a kid. Why?
I raise my head and glare at Tony. I'm going to ask him for he hundredth time but I know he won't tell me. "Tony, what the fuck happened that day at the big house? Loki did something to my mom. Why was he chasing us? Tell me what Happened and why? Have you found him yet and Bucky?" I expect to be yelling and angry but the sadness and fear take over, instead. Tears stream down my cheeks and I pull my knees up to my chest.
Tony sighs, deeply and looks into my eyes."No, we haven't found him. But we have a good idea of where he's going."
I glare at him, waiting for the answer to the rest of my question. He's silent. "Tony. Tell me what you know." I snarl.
He sighs, again, dropping his head. "I have no idea what happened with your mom and Loki, kid.'
The anger is back now and I'm on my feet. "You're lying! Jesus Tony, after everything I've been through! After you swore you wouldn't lie to me again!" I'm roaring now and my body is vibrating. His hands are on my shoulders holding me in place. He looks hurt, mad.
"I am telling you the truth! Back when you first told Doctor Price about the man you were seeing and the memory of your mom and her friend, I confronted Fury. I demanded that tell me what you were talking about but he wouldn't fess up. He's been avoiding me ever since, El. He's hiding something. Something about our family. I just know it." His voice is quiet on the last few words, shaky.
"Tony what do you mean? What are you talking about?" I ask, breathlessly, unable to hide my anxiety. I've never seen him so unglued like this before.
He catches my worried expression and shakes his head. "Don't worry about it. I'll find out soon enough." He hops off the bed and bends down to plant a kiss on my forehead. "Tony, wait. I want to talk about this." I start and leap of the bed, wincing but his hands are in the air, signalling that the conversation is over.
Then, he looks at me up and down with a devilish smirk. "What?" I ask, blushing. He smiles and kisses my cheek. "I just hope I can make Pepper this happy some day." He whispers and turns to leave. "Oh, you're meeting her next week by the way. Now that you're not a complete liability, I've decided we're going to have dinner." He smirks but I grab his elbow, stopping him in the doorway.
"Wait, dinner? Where? I have no clothes here. Where the hell are we by the way?" I ask, taking in the room.
He laughs and yanks his elbow away, playfully and leaves my room before shouting back. "Somewhere over Ireland I'd say.. by the look of it down there!."
I blink after him, baffled by his words. I run over to the window and stare out. All I can see is darkening clouds as the sun falls in the sky. I stare down at the lush green landscapes thousands of feet below me. "What the fuck? Are we on a plane?"
"Yes." His soft words make me jump. I whip around and stare at him, holding my pounding heart. He makes a face and then smiles. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you." He's carrying a small tray filled with sandwiches, bags of chips and sodas and a huge bar of chocolate.
