"Taxi!" I yelled as I waved my arm crazily in the air. When the taxi flew past me, I angrily blew a puff of air out of my mouth and lowered my hand.
Vacationing in NYC isn't fun when you don't have a car and have to rely on taxis all the time. Another taxi comes in my direction and I wave my arm again, hoping it would stop. It does and I reach for the door handle. Another hand beats mine to it.
"Hey! I hailed this cab!" I yelled at the man who beat me to the door handle.
"No, I got this one. You can get another one."
"I've been waiting for fifteen minutes! This is my cab!"
"Hey lovebirds!" a voice barked from inside the cab. "The meter's running. Either get in or stop wasting my time."
The guy and I looked at each other before stumbling over each other trying to explain to this cab driver that we aren't together.
"Do I look like I care? Meter's running. Either get in or stop wasting my time."
"Well, I hailed the taxi, so I get it."
"No, I hailed the taxi, so it's mine."
"Well, since we can't come to a consensus, let's share the taxi then." We look at each other briefly before sliding into the taxi.
"Where to?"
"Empire State Building," we both said at the same time. We looked at each other, surprised we wanted to go to the same place.
"That'll be $32.50."
"Oh, ok," I said, fumbling with my wallet.
"I got it." I looked at the guy next to me. We literally just met and he's already gonna pay for my taxi ride.
"How about we go Dutch and split it?"
"That works. Let's split it."
"Ok."
We awkwardly sat in silence in the back of the taxi, the honking of New York traffic all around us. I looked out the window and saw cars around us slowing down. Not a second later, we come to a stop.
"Traffic jam," the driver barked at us.
I looked at the man next to me. If we're gonna be stuck in traffic, I might as well get to know this stranger.
"So, why are you going to the Empire State Building?"
"Me and some friends are filming a video."
"That sounds cool. What's it about?"
"Probably just us goofing off and showing off the view. It's part of a NYC vlog we're doing."
"Oh! Are you YouTubers?"
"Yeah. The channel's Unspeakable."
"Unspeakable. I might just have to check it out."
Silence settled over us again and I felt really awkward. I turned back to my window and stare outside again. We haven't moved an inch.
"So, why are you going to the Empire State Building?"
"Just touring. Haven't been to this section of the city in awhile."
"You live here?"
"Yeah. I do vlogs on my life in New York. My channel is (Y/n) Travels."
"Wow. You travel a lot?"
"Kinda. I've been to Tokyo, Moscow, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, and of course nearly every state."
"Geez. I wish I could travel like that."
"It took a lot of work. And money. So much money!" I jokingly wailed. "My wallet is still screaming."
"Hey, random thought, but do you wanna be our tour guide for the city? None of us have been here before."
"I can. It'll be fun. If we ever get out of this traffic jam."
"Hey, you mind if I start recording now?"
"No problem. Hey, sir," I hollered at the driver, "you mind if we record?"
"Whatever," the driver grumbled in reply.
"Hey everyone!" the guy next to me said. "I'm in a New York taxi getting a tour of the city with New York based (Y/n) Travels."
"Hey everybody!" I greeted. "Today we're on our way to the Empire State Building. Right now, we're stuck in traffic. Classic New York." As I spoke, the driver let out many incoherent yells at the cars in front of us. "And yes, taxi drivers are as aggressive as you think."
Traffic starts moving again and we make it another half block before we're stopped again. I looked at the man next to me who has stopped recording by now.
"So, what's your name? I didn't ask before."
"Nathan. Is yours (Y/n)?"
"Yeah."
"Is traffic always this bad?"
"Depends on the time of day, but yeah."
"How far are we?"
"Probably three or so blocks away."
"Could we walk it?"
"It honestly might be quicker than the taxi. Sir, here's good. How much?"
"27.65."
"Here," Nathan said, handing the driver his credit card.
The driver greedily took it and charged the entire ride to his card. Once the card was handed back, we climbed out and started walking to the Empire State Building.
"I thought we said we were gonna split it."
"Well, you're giving me and my friends a tour so that's fair."
"Not really, but ok."
We started walking around the city, me pointing out landmarks and Nathan vlogging nearly the entire time. When we got to the Empire State Building, there's a lot of people around, but four other guys standing off to the side
"That's them," Nathan said, pointing at the four guys standing together in a group. When they saw Nathan, they shouted their hellos.
"Hey guys."
"Hi," I said, peeking my head out from behind Nathan.
"Who's this?" one guy asked.
"This is (Y/n). She's gonna tour us around the city."
"I thought the point of this vlog was that we wouldn't have a tour guide." I looked at the guy who spoke. He has caramel colored skin and dark hair.
"Well, he insisted paying for my half of the taxi ride so I'm paying him back. You guys wanna start this tour?"
"Oh yeah!" one of the guys cheered.
"So, what's first on the list?"
I smiled at Nathan's excitement before turning to the group. "Who's up for the Empire State Building?"
