The night is cold, the fireplace is lit. I hear nothing but the crackling of the fire and the crickets' chirps outside. I jumped on my couch, legs stretched, my toes wiggling underneath my thick winter socks.
Finally, I can read this book I bought yesterday back in town. Just when I was about to turn the first page, the kettle whistled. I tried to make myself tea when I sensed a presence.
I sighed and grabbed a second cup. I prepared the cups of tea and placed it on my coffee table, when I heard him knock on the door.
I opened my front door and peaked my head out.
A tall scarred man stood in front of me, his smile widened and his cheeks turned red immediately. I felt my cheeks heat up as well. I pulled out my pocket watch and looked at it.
"...Two years...nine months...four days... Took you long enough to find me, Kohdor." I looked up at him with a big stupid grin on my face.
"You're good at hiding, I'll give you that." He said in between his little laughs.
I opened the door fully and this gave Kohdor the opportunity to pounce on me and give me his signature bear hug. Both of us giggling like kids.
Kohdor puts me down gently, "Damn did you lose weight? You became lighter."
"Naw... Just forgets to eat sometimes."
He looked disappointed. He does not like it when I don't take care of myself. "I'm not starving myself, okay?" I tried to reassure him.
"...Alright. You still eat meat, yeah?"
I laughed, "Of course!"
He then fixed his sight on my hair. "Interesting hair color." I just smiled at him. "Do I look super normal now?" We both kinda laughed.
Kohdor looked around my house and compliments how cozy it was inside. He sure loved the naturey vibes. I handed him the cup of tea and he immediately took a sip. He spotted the book that I was about to read and grabbed it.
"So, you did get into reading books, huh?" I just nodded slightly while sipping on my tea. "Alice In Wonderland..." I saw him smirk as he read the title. "This is a good one." He continued as he put it back down.
He looked around once more "You know what? Me and my pets could live here too."
I almost spat my tea. I cleared my throat, "Uhm, you movin' in or somethin'?" He shot his head to me and with a toothy smile said, "Yes! Don't you miss me?"
I just shook my head and smiled, "...I guess I do."
I asked him about his pets and boy, I am not even surprised. The man always loved animals, especially the exotic ones. And I'm thinking I could use a company again.
He is still single, unsurprisingly. I saw Kohdor shiver as I thought of that. Did I think that out loud?!
My thoughts were interrupted when he suddenly walked out the front door, I followed him.
"Do you see this?!" He was looking up at the sky. I looked up too. The sky is dark, but man was it covered in glittering stars. It's one of the things I thank myself for everyday for choosing to live far away in the mountains.
"You don't see this kinda stuff in the cities. It's beautiful..."
"I know..." I nodded slowly.
I was about to tell Kohdor that he and his pets could move in with me, when I saw a small envelope on top of my table on the porch. "That's not from you, right?"
Kohdor looked at the table and saw the envelope. "...No..."
The both of us narrowed our eyes. I warily grabbed it and flipped it, looking for a sign of the sender. But the envelope had nothing in it but my name written in bold gold letters. And a wax seal with an unfamiliar logo.
