When He Returned - Part 7

I looked up at myself in the mirror. I was pretty scruffed up and worn out... It was visible, quite visible indeed. The only thing that was still perfectly in place and clean was my dress. I wore a black dress that lengthened only down to a little above my knees and consisted of velvet and lace. It was an evening cocktail dress, but I liked it enough to wear it for this afternoon.
My hair was loose, not tied up for once. In fact, I had curled it a little into wavy spirals. It seemed a little displaced after my little incident, but a little fixing would do the job. I however was perspiring excessively. I had drops forming on my forehead and I had grown pale. It would be extremely noticeable that I was crying too. My eyes were reddened and the make-up smudged, the eyeliner smeared down from my eyes.
I had to fix myself up. I didn't want anyone seeing me in this condition. It would cause too much attention which was most definitely not needed tonight.
Just then there was a discreet knock at the bathroom door.
"Eva... ? Is everything alright in there?" It was James. He stood just outside the locked door knocking gently on the door.
"Yes." My voice cracked up a bit, on the first damn word. "Yes I'm fine James… I just needed to fix something." I replied as boldly as I possibly could, masking my shaky voice.
"Alright, I'm just making sure."
It seemed he had left heading back to the table as it grew silent once more.
I turned glancing at my reflection in the mirror, the dreaded make up still smeared down my face. I reached for my purse searching frantically for some cotton, something I almost always carried around with me no matter what. There it was tucked in the pouch as I ripped it out running it under the cold tap water. I brought it up to my face wiping the make-up off hoarsely as the skin reddened in the areas I rubbed with the cotton.✨
