When He Returned - Part 17

It took me about an hour or so to get me through one stack and I was exhausted already by then. I noticed there was another pile of letters, smaller than the stack of papers, rested on the corner of the table. I received them this morning and hadn't read through and replied to them yet... Today was going to be a long day.
There was a silent knock at the door. "Eva, it's me." James spoke whispering for some odd reason.
"Come inside James, why on earth are you whispering?" I furrowed my eyebrows slightly as I set a letter down and looked up at the door watching it open slowly. He creeped in with bags clutched close to his chest and he crouched low shuffling inside the room shutting the door carefully behind him.
I widened my eyes slightly watching him, was he crazy? "James, what the hell are you doing?"
"Shhhhhhh!" He hurried across the floor to my desk, still crouched down low as if hiding from someone or something. "They're going to find us!" He hissed.
"Who?"
"The guards! They're out to kill us!"
"James? What the actual fuck?" I laughed leaning back on the chair as it tilted back slightly. "What did you get to eat? I'm starving.."
"Chicken wraps, fresh from la boulangerie." He smirked straightening himself up as he set the bags on the vacant area of the table.
'Perfect'. I thought to myself as I grinned reaching for the bag opening it up. The warm smell of the toasted wraps and chicken wavered through the air causing my mouth to water hungrily. Just the sight of the neatly wrapped rolls was tempting enough for me to greedily take one and bite into it's soft yet crisp bread.✨
