Sleep Paralysis

Sam was tired. Like bone-tired. So tired that if he stays awake any longer his Innes will collapse under the weight and sheet exhaustion. So as he gives Bucky a peck on the cheek he heads off to bed, knowing Bucky wont come until later.

Everything was going all right, until it wasn't. It started of as nothing but a couple voices mingling together, as if they were speaking over themselves. Then, it progressed into gunfire going off, the clunks of bullets and cries of fallen friends and foes. Suddenly, he's back in the war, he and Riley flying together, inseperable.

Then suddenly, the man beside him was falling, except this time it wasn't Riley, no. If was Bucjy falling, his metal arm extended as he tried to reach Sam's outstretched hand.

His cries and then he awakes. But something wasn't right. He was frozen, his limbs suddenly heavy like lead. His chest felt constricted, as if someone was pressing against his chest, restraining him. He tries to call out to Bucky but his mouth opens in a wordless scream.

God, this is a horrible feeling. The feeling of being frozen while you endure this tiring battle. His body starts to convulse, tears springing to his eyes as tries once more to call out Bucky.

Then it just stops.

Nothing.

Nothing except his pounding heart and the adrenaline thrumming through his veins. It was dark still, the moon shining brightly. The stars twinkled and shimmered, a comforting gesture.

He flicks his wrists, almost sobbing in relief when he can move again. He swings his legs over the bed, testing out the waters before stumbling.

He lands with a thud.

"Sam?" Bucky voice filters from downstairs. He exhales, his hands still shaking from the adrenaline rush.

The door opens with a slight creak and warm orange light seeps through, the silhouette of his boyfriend above him.

Immediately, hands are on him.

They run over his face and his body, checking him for injuries.

He wants to push away, let Barnes know that he's okay, but whatever he just experienced left him drained. Like a victim of blood-thirsty vampire.

He was still shaking when Bucky gently helped him up, amusement gone and replaced with worry.

Couldn't blame him.

Sam wasn't a very clumsy person, always had good composure.

So to see Sam like this, shaking with undoubtedly tears in his eyes, it's a concerning sight.

"You alright, babe?"

He tries to smile but it feels forced.

"Yeah. Just a nightmare."

It wasn't just a nightmare but Samuel wasn't going to tell Bucky any time soon.
