Injured

(Sorry, but I've changed the title and the plot.)

"You okay, Barnes?" Wilson asks, his eyebrows pinched and a small frown tugging down at his lips. They were established behind a makeshift hidey-hole in the woods, currently patching up Bucky. He wasn't looking, too busy focusing on trying to stop himself from falling into a panic attack. He thought all the triggers were gone, but not and in the end, it not only risked his life but Sam's too. He doesn't think he could put up with the guilt had Sam also been injured.

He can't help but let out a slight whine when Sam tugs a little too hard. Sam freezes, his eyes wide with worry and panic before whispering sorry and continuing.

Something was off about the new Captain America. He seemed more... Lost. Lost inside his head like Bucky usually is after missions involving getting rid of the last traces of Hydra. It would have worried Bucky if he weren't so exhausted but then Sam's eyes flutter and he's falling back and Bucky doesn't know what the hell he is supposed to do!

"Sam!" He can barely conceal the worry and panic in his voice when he dives forward, lifting his shirt to find it sopping wet with blood. Bucky's seen his fair share of blood but it never made the curling of his stomach stop. It was even worse since Sam was the one bleeding all over the floor, eyes unfocused and unresponsive. He would've looked dead if it wasn't for the wheezes escaping his mouth as he struggles to breathe. It fills Bucky up with so much panic that tears have started to form, his heart smashing against his ribcage, making him want to curl over and vomit.

"Sam, you still with me?"

No response.

Shit. Fuck. Oh god, Sam's going to die all because Bucky was too blind to bloody see the dark patch on his shirt. Jesus, if he hadn't been so selfish, then this wouldn't have been happening. Still, he couldn't help but feel angry at Sam. For getting himself shot.  Bucky could feel himself spiralling but he can't. Not when Sam is dying.

After what's been minutes that felt like hours, he finally got Sam's bleeding under control. Still, he couldn't stop himself from checking his pulse every second. Sam had passed out a while ago and Bucky was anxious. Terrified that he failed Steve once again. It seems like he can't do anything correct... And he knows how close Sam was to Steve, and how much Sam meant to Steve.

He's dragged out from his depressing thoughts when he hears a small cry come from the man below. Bucky hates how pathetic he feels. He couldn't even protect Sam. I'm sorry.

Bucky didn't know who he was apologising to. Whether he was apologising to Steve or Sam. He didn't know. His mind was this jumbled mess of thoughts he's still piecing together even after years after he was the Winter Soldier. Still, as he looks down at Sam, he can't help but feel useless.

"Look after him, Buck?" Steve says, his eyes were soft with love and guilt and regret. Sure, Bucky was mad. He was livid. He only got Steve back only for him to get up and leave. Maybe, Steve was missing his best girl and Bucky also guesses Tony's death had a big part in the choice. Even though he didn't know Wilson very well, he knew he could be trusted. Because if Star-Spangled-Man-With-A-Plan trusted him, then perhaps he could trust Sam, too. It would be nice to have someone he can rely on. It would be very nice.

"Barnes?"

"I'm sorry." He says, looking like someone kicked his puppy and it made Sam weak to his knees. "You okay, man?" He asks and Bucky barely bites back the scoff. He should be the one asking, not the other way around. After all, Sam was the one with a fatal injury, had it been any longer, Bucky would have lost his partner (maybe even more but now isn't the time to dwell too much).

"I'm alright, Bucky. It wasn't your fault."

Without thinking, he latches onto Sam, wrapping him in a tight but gentle hug as he inhales shakily. Sam tenses but soon relaxes.

"It's alright, Bucky. I'm okay."
