"No, mom. Everything is doing fine here. How about you and dad? Dad told me you went to a cooking club the other night. He said you wanted to try out something new." I tell, putting my phone between my shoulders and my face to grab continue mixing the brownie batter.
"Yeah, your dad actually urged me to try something new when I started feeling down. He's been at the office and the garage a lot, and considering the amount of work I did to plan that wedding, he thought I might need to take some time for myself." She explains through the phone, making a little smile appear on my face.
It's nice to see that my dad is worried about my mom and trying to get her to try new things. My mom isn't really the person to try new things out of the blue. She's always anxious she's going to hate what's she's doing.
"That sounds nice, mom. Is it something you would consider doing more often? Might be good for you to do this in your spare time. Also, you have a passion for cooking, something I inherited from you." I mention, putting the brownie batter in the right baking mold.
"It might be. Anyway, your brother has been a pain in the ass lately. As you know, he's staying with us for some time while until the renovation of his apartment is done in Chicago. I can't remember how I used to live with the three of you, or at least tolerate the amount of mess you made and still make." She says, making me laugh softly. I can see the mess my brother has made of the house before my eyes. Oliver was always known for leaving his stuff behind everywhere.
"You should threaten to throw him out if he doesn't start cleaning up. I'm not sure if he would listen to that though, so you might have to go through with it." I laugh, making her let out a tired sigh on the other side of the line.
"I know for sure you are my child. Only a child of mine would come up with such a thought. It's tempting, I must admit that. I'll just tell him one more time that he needs to clean up his stuff, and if he doesn't, I'll throw him out." She says, making me chuckle.
"You know what? I'll tell him right now. Knowing him, he's probably still sleeping. I'll talk to you later this week, Amelia. I love you and come visit soon." My mom says, making a soft smile appear on my face.
The downside of living so far away from home is that I don't get to see my family very often. I love this place here, but it's never the same as it is at home. Sometimes, I miss the times where I would still live at home and have dinner with my parents every evening. It's those small things I miss doing with my family.
"I miss you, mum. I'll call you soon, and I love you to the moon and back." I say before hanging up the phone and placing it on the kitchen counter. I put the brownie in the oven and make sure to set the timer.
"Are you making brownies again?" Dylan yells from the living room, and I chuckle at her reaction. Dylan absolutely loves my brownies, and I'm not kidding when I say that. She's a little kid of five years old when it comes to brownies. It's her favorite thing to eat.
"Yeah, I am. I thought it would be a nice dessert for tonight. We can eat it in front of the tv while we watch a movie. I need to think about other things than what I'm thinking of right now." I say, making Dylan shoot me a surprised look.
"Look, I know you think that Caine is just messing with you, but what if he just wants to talk. I mean, he probably realizes that he was shitty years ago, and maybe there's an explanation he wants to give you." Dylan explains, making me shoot her a confused glare.
"Don't you think you deserve an explanation? I don't think he left that note without a good reason. He might be complicated and dangerous, but he does have a good heart. He just wants to clear things up for you, at least that's what I think." Dylan says, a genuine smile tucking the corners of her lips.
