I hardly saw Luck over the next few days, he was always busy with something and I realized how much I missed him.
"Is it possible that in in love with him? I've only known him for 3 months."
Just then Vanessa came swaying into the room.
"Vanessa, I think I'm in love." I blurted.
"You sink? What's zat supposed to mean?" She slurred on her words.
"Well, I've never been in love before, so I don't know what it's like."
"Well, then I'll just go and ask him on a date right now."
"Don't make me fight you!" I even surprised myself with that outburst, my hand had even instinctively gone to my Grimoire.
"Well I'd say that's answer enough!" Vanessa said triumphantly.
I managed to pass Luck off one time and asked him what was going on.
"I-I can't tell you yet…" he stammered.
Luck stammering? Something was definitely up.
"It's a secret." He grinned, some of his usual personality back.
He then ran off and I started thinking what it could be. My (18th) birthday had been before I'd even joined a squad and if it was anyone else's surely I'd be roped in too, right?
*That evening*
"Hey, Beckie!"
I spun around seeing Noelle, who had just tapped on my shoulder.
"Hey, what's up?"
"You might want to go up to the roof." She said, wiggling her eyebrows in a suggestive fashion.
"Okay…?"
Not having much else to do I went up and clambered onto the roof.
"Hey, Beckie!" An all too familiar voice said from behind me.
I spun around seeing Luck standing there with a picnic basket.
"What's all this?" I asked curious.
"Um,... well... This is what I've been doing all week." He said flustered.
"Can I sit?" I asked, gesturing to one of the lawn chairs that was standing on the roof.
"Uh. Yeah, of course!" He chuckled nervously.
I'd never seen Luck nervous before. He was always the brave, confident one fighting everybody and everything.
He sat down in the chair next to me and opened the picnic basket. He then got out two bowls of soup.
"How did that not spill?" I asked, baffled.
"The basket's magical. It's bigger on the inside. All the food for tonight's in here."
As we were finishing the main course ( a salmon-fillet with baked potatoes ) I realized something…
"Sorry for being blunt, but how did this take a week to prepare? I mean Charmy could have made this in 20 minutes."
"Well most of the time, I was waiting for the stuff to arrive, that I had to pre-order, and the rest of the time I was avoiding you."
Ouch. I thought, looking away.
Luck must've noticed my distance and added quickly:
"You know how rotten I am with secrets! I almost blabbed to you this morning."
I smiled as I remembered the last secret I'd told him and the disaster it had ended in.
"What is it?" He asked
"Oh, nothing. Just remembering Magna's failed surprise party."
"What? He's my best friend, you really can't blame me for that one!"
"I can and I will!" I retorted stubbornly.
After we'd finished our meal we spent the rest of the night talking about everything, Faris came up a LOT. The night ended when we heard our 40th owl hooting and Luck decided it was time to go to bed.
*The next few days after the Underwater Temple*
Luck was acting weird (again), he was hardly fighting anyone and was exhausted most of the time.
"Luck, I've known you long enough now, what's wrong?"
"Nothing, I just have to get stronger."
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"It means I have to get stronger, now go away!" He yelled.
Yep. Luck Voltia, had yelled at me.
So I ran. Into the base, up the stairs and into the first empty room I found, hoping it was mine and I wept. I laid there for hours just sobbing and wallowing in my own misery, when someone opened the door and entered the room. It was Luck. Of all the people it could have been, whose room I invaded and bedsheets I cried the hell out of, it had to be Luck's.
"Beckie?" He asked, astonished.
"Huh? Oh sorry, I'll go now," I said wiping my tears and getting up to leave "You clearly don't like me anymore."
"Wait a minute," he said, grabbing my arm and holding me back.
"What do you mean by that? Is that what you think?"
I nodded.
"I'm distancing myself from you to protect you!" He said as though it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"You're going to have to explain that to me, genius."
"In the Underwater Temple, you nearly died, because I was dumb enough to expose my weak spot. I could never forgive myself if you were to die because of me. I care about you too much Beckie, I don't think I'd survive without you."
"I care about you too, dumbass. Why else would I protect you like that? Besides I would do the same for Finral, Noelle, Gordon, Vanessa, literally everyone here! Also our love for each other is what makes us stronger."
"Oh my god! That's so cliché!" Luck laughed.
"Well, I'm pretty knackered," I said, yawning.
"Well, good night, Beckie," He said, planting a kiss on my cheek.
