There was still blood on the marble floor in the throne room of Olympus. No matter how many times King Perseus ordered it cleaned, it never was. It served as a reminder of all the things he'd lost, leaving him where he was now; the Tyrant King of Olympus. It had been two months since he'd destroyed Zeus and taken over Olympus, two months since he'd killed Jason...
He was staring at the bloodstains on the marble floor when Annabeth Chase burst into the room. He'd been surprised that she'd chosen to stay after he let the demigods leave, but it didn't bother him. He actually liked her being here.
Except when she tried to talk to him about his tyranny.
"Can we talk now?" she asked. He grinned, crossing his left leg over his right, "Why Annabeth, we can always talk! Do you think this color suits me?"
She rolled her eyes, "I meant about this!"
She gestured to the room around her. He frowned, "Do I need more decorations?"
She growled, "NO! You need to give up the throne."
His demeanor immediately became much darker. He put both feet back on the ground and leant forward, hissing, "Do you want to end up dead, Miss Chase?"
She paled, and he almost laughed. He would never do anything to harm her. He only threatened her so she would shut her mouth. Athena walked in
"Your majesty," she bowed, "There is someone here to see you."
He sat up straight, he liked visitors, "Please take dear Annabeth back to her rooms for me."
Athena bowed and walked out. The doors at the end of the throne room opened, and in walked...
"Polybotes," Percy growled. The giant grinned, "Hello Perseus."***
Athena was walking Annabeth down a hallway when Annabeth decided to ask her mom a question.
"Hey mom," Annabeth said. Athena raised an eyebrow.
"Why did you join Percy?"
Athena frowned, "I was forced to, my dear."
Annabeth rolled her eyes, "That is a terrible answer."
Athena grabbed her daughter's arm and hissed in her ear, "There are eyes everywhere!"
The goddess dragged Annabeth down the hallway and down the spiral staircase to the dungeon.
"Why are we down here?" Annabeth asked as they walked through the wall.
"Because," Athena said, "It's the only place Percy doesn't monitor."
Annabeth's eyes were immediately drawn to the bloodstains on the floor. Athena noticed her gaze, and her eyes became sad, "It's horrible, isn't it?"
Annabeth nodded. Athena continued, "Us gods can be so cruel, especially in anger. It was obvious to anyone who cared. Percy did not steal the trident, and throwing him away like we did made him into the thing we were scared of."
"Didn't you vote in his favor?"
"Yes, but I didn't protect him beforehand. If I'd kept him safe from the gods cruelty, he wouldn't be afraid, and his fear wouldn't have turned into hatred, and the feeling that the gods had to be anihilated."
Annabeth felt like giving her mom a hug, but she wasn't sure if that would be wise. Athena sighed, "The only reason I stay by him so readily is because I'm hoping that somehow, I can lead him out of the darkness."
Annabeth smiled softly as her mom continued, "I know you want your Percy to come back, but he won't if you continue to demand he give up the throne. He is broken inside, and we need to be careful with the shards of emotion he tries to hard to disguise."
Annabeth nodded, and Athena embraced her, "I love you Annabeth."
"Love you too, mom."***
Polybotes strolled around the throne room, stopping at the bloodstains a grinning, "I love the new floor color."
Percy rolled his eyes, "Well it is rather difficult to clean up."
"So, which demigod did you kill? Smells like spawn of Jupiter, but one can never be sure when smelling old blood."
"Jason Grace," Percy replied, "Pity you didn't come last week. We took his rotting body off the gates last friday. The smell was disgusting."
"Where did you put it?"
Percy waved a jeweled hand lazily, "I sent it back to the Greeks. If nobody burned me a shroud I would be very annoyed."
Polybotes grinned, "You make a good point."
"Why are you here?" Percy asked. Polybotes shrugged, "I could say to pay my favorite demigod..."
"God," Percy reminded him, sighing. Polybotes continued as if he hadn't heard, "But that would be lying."
He walked up to Percy's throne, "I'm here on behalf of Gaea. She orders you either give up the throne or bring her here. And Tartarus says he's had enough of the gods running around his domain."
Percy rolled his eyes, "You know, it would be nice to get through a day without someone trying to remove me from the throne. I could send you back to Tartarus, you know."
"Not by yourself."
"I have demigods. I'll bring them out and you can choose which one you want to be killed by."
Polybotes laughed, "You're hilarious, Perseus."
Percy's eyes narrowed, "I wasn't joking."
Polybotes seemed to find that even funnier. Once he was done rolling around on the floor in laughter, he turned back to Perseus, "You have three days to give up the throne."
He turned and strode from the room. Percy rolled his eyes. He was really starting to get annoyed at the people who thought they could overthrow him. How many people did he have to kill to show that he wasn't giving up the throne any time soon?
He stood. It was time to choose the demigod who would help him destroy Polybotes.
