a day later you get a call from your dad. the time travel worked, they only needed to find a way to not die if they would use the stones. your dad asked if someone could bring him some spare clothes because it could take days to find a way to do it. you took it upon yourself to bring him some clean clothes. you drove over to HQ. when you walked in there was a somber vibe hanging in the air. on your way to your dad's lab you ran into Steve who looked sad. without saying anything he hugs you tightly. you wrap your arms around him, feeling he really needed this hug right now.
you kept your arms around him until he would let go. "I'm sorry" he says as he let's go and wipes his tears away. "what happened?" you ask him. "it's Nat she, she" he says. "she's dead" your dad says as he walks up to you. "what?!" you say in shock "we can bring her back with the rest right?" you say hopeful. you see Steve shake his head. "I'm sorry y/n" your dad says as tears form in your eyes. "but how, what" you say before you burst out crying. Steve holds you close as you let sink in that your best friend was gone. this is what your dad meant with the risks of this mission.
"please tell me we can at least get the rest back?" you say letting go of Steve and wiping away your tears. "we're gonna try sweetheart" your dad says and you see something else bothered him. "dad?" you say getting his attention "what's wrong?" you ask him. "what do you mean?" he asks. you look over to Steve, he had the same look on his face. "how far did you go back in time?" you asked them. "y/n" Steve says. "how far?" you ask them again raising your voice a little now. "far" Steve says. "you saw her" you say looking to the ground. "yes" Steve replied softly, knowing you meant Peggy. "who did you see?" you asked your dad. "my dad" he says looking down to the ground. "are you okay?" you ask him giving him a light hug, knowing his dad was an asshole. "actually, i found closure" he says stroking your hair. "good" you say to him.
you catch up with everyone, talking about everything that happened and what was about to happen, well if everything was going according to plan. after a while you decide to go back home, letting them work on the plan. you walked to the exit as you felt someone grab your hand. "Steve" you say as you turn around. "y/n it wasn't" he begins but you stop him. "you don't have to explain to me Steve, I'm not your girlfriend anymore" you say to him. "it isn't like that y/n" he says. "listen Steve, I genuinely wish you the world, i really mean that. and if that is Peggy, I support you. who knows maybe you can go back in time after all this is over. spend your life with her. i just want you to be happy Steve, you deserv-" before you finish your sentence Steve's lips are on yours, kissing you deeply. making all the butterflies resurface in your stomach. as he pulls away you look deep into his eyes and he does the same. "in case i don't come back" he says.
