Prologue
(Avery's Point of View)
I jerked awake and jumped out of my bed. The heat in my room picks up and it becomes almost unbearable to breath. I violently cough and cough; I start choking on the air as I exit my bedroom only to be trapped by flames. The fire violently comes my way. I then soon watch my door become devoured by the bright orange flames.
"MOM, DAD," I scream. I kept repeating myself louder and louder again.
The room felt like it was getting hotter and hotter by the minute. Goodness only knows how much time we had left to escape. I was worried that the whole house would collapse and my family and I would be nothing, but a bunch of ashes mixed in with the burning house. The clock was ticking and time was slowly running out.
I yelled my parents name as loud as I could. I scremed from the top of my longs till my throat hurt. Not a moment later I heard footsteps. I just prayed they were my parents.
I soon could see an unclear vision of my parents coming towards me. The heat of the smoke begins to burn my eyes. I could see them start to tear up. I knew it was only going to get worse. From what I could tell they both had small bright red fire extinguishers in there hands. They where trying to delay the fire so they could make it to where I was standing.
Once they got to where I was my mom and dad both looked relieved that they had found me. My dad began to talk to me.
"Avery, listen to me now I want you to get out of this house as quick as you can. The fastest way that I see is to go out you bedroom window. When you get out of here I want you to stand far away from this house. You understand? Your mom and I will meet you outside. NOW GO!" MY dad yelled.
"I refuse to leave you guys. I love you to much. and I am scared if I exit that window right at this moment I may not ever see you again."I yelled back and started to cry.
"GO NOW! We are going to be fine. The more we talk the less time we are going to have, if we plan on surviving this fire." Yelled my dad.
My mom walked close to me and gently placed a kiss on my forehead. "I love you sweetie, now go." She whispered in my ear and gave me a little push in the direction of my bedroom. Then she turned to leave.
I watched as my dad grabbed my mom's hand and disappeared around the corner, gone just like that. I swiped the tears off my face and rushed back into my bedroom at lightning speed. I quickly grabbed the first bag I could find which happened to be a light blue bag with lime green stripes running down horizontally. I grabbed a few of my favorite possessions and shoved them all in the back. Then I ungracefully climbed out of my bedroom window and landed with a thump. I groaned from the rough landing, but got up and ran away from the house.
One of my neighbors must have called an ambulance and the fire department because as soon as I came outside I could hear the loud siren of the fire trucks and ambulances coming my way. Not even five seconds later they pulled up front to my house.
A paramedic came up to me and gently took my hand and led me to the ambulance. She checked my blood pressure, checked my heart, looked in my mouth, and even a few breathing exercises just to make sure everything was okay. The kind paramedic told me everything looked fine and I was good to go, but if anything started to hurt or feel weird to tell my parents immediately and have them call your doctor.
I gave the lady a quick nod and sat on the edge of the ambulance watching my house seeing if there was any sign of my parents. It felt like ages since I had been sitting her watching the house waiting for my parents to emerge, but in reality I have only been watching the house for less than a minute.
Just as the water was about to come blasting from the hose, I saw my mother and father run out of the house holding a medium sized brown leather brief case as the house blew up and sparks flew everywhere. The house had been consumed by the fire. Smoke filled the air polluting it. I stood there in shock watching as my house collapsed to the ground in front of my very eyes... All that had remained of my house was ashes and a barley standing structure.
I was struck with pure terror. Never had I been this scared in my life. It was a frightening experience to watch. I was so happy that my parents made it out in time. That at the time had to be my main concern. The paramedics quickly rushed to my parents aid and pulled them into the opposite ambulance I was sitting on.
My parents where in the ambulance for a good ten minute before they had finally come out. The paramedics said they had some minor burns and were very lucky to come out as good of shape as they had. They were given some burn medicine and told not to take hot showers because apparently that would agitate the burns.
The firemen destroyed every bit of the fire with the crystal clear blue water coming out of their hose in full force. Just looking at what now is a pile of ashes I began to remember all the good times I had in that house and the bad. I took my first baby steps in that house, I said my first word, and now it all burnt crisp, gone, nothing left. My mind took a quick stroll through memory lane as I stared at the ashes that were left. I was just so glad my parents and I made it out alive.
I noticed my parents were in what looked to be a very heated conversation a few feet away from me. Curious to what they where talking about I began to walk over to them.
I hurried my pace and jumped into my mother's arms. This soon turned into a group hug as my father wrapped his arms around all of us.
"I was so worried." I whispered tearing up slightly.
"We were too darling, we were too." My mom whispered back getting emotional.
"I love you guys so much!" I told my parents.
"We do to." My dad answered back. "But listen we need to talk to you. Your mom and I had a long talk and with think we have reached the best desicion for your safety."
"What would that be?" I asked looking slightly confused.
"Darling," my mom said. "Your father and I think it's best for you to move in with your grandparents after this fire." she said with tears threatening to pour out.
My dad walked to my mom's side and slid his arm around her waist and gently kissed her forehead.
"But why?" I questioned. "It was just a fire... Wasn't it?" I asked
"Look darling," my dad said," We do not believe that this fire happened on accident, so for you safety we will be sending you off to leave with your mom's parents."
"I want to stay with you guys though," I said my voice started to crack as tears started to pool down my cheek.
"We would love that darling, but you got to trust us, we will visit when we can, I promise." my mother said as pools of water came tumbling down her cheek that glistened in the sun.
"I trust you." I said.
My mom pulled my family into a group hug and we all sheded a few tears. I never thought I'd see that day when my dad would cry, but if he was I knew whatever was going on must have been extremely serious.
The fire trucks had began to leave along with the ambulances. The fire was gone and I would soon be living with my grandparents. My mom had to make a few phone calls first which she took in private while my dad and I waited for her. We had a taxi come pick us up and drive us to my grandparents house. I watched as my house slowly disappeared from my view. Nothing could be salvaged, but at least I had been smart enough to have packed some of my most valuable things.
When we arrived at my grandparent's house we said a quick good bye I could tell it was hard on my parents, but I knew their intent for making me live with my grandparents were good, I watched them drive away in the taxi as I dragged myself up to my grandparent's house and was instantly given warm embraces and huge smiles. This may not be so bad after all, but I would really miss my parents because I missed them already.
