"Checkmate."
"What?"
"I said checkmate, you lost."
"Fuck!" The girl in front of me slammed the palms of her hand onto the table. I flinched, seeing the chess pieces topple off of the board.
"Newman!"
We both whipped our heads in the direction of the nurse's station.
"Watch your language," Nurse Chauncey pointed her finger at my chess partner. She opted to ignore the woman and simply sighed, glaring up at me through her bangs.
"No matter what, I can never beat you. It's infuriating! Where did you learn to play chess?" She smiled.
"To be honest, I don't really remember. It's always just been there." I shrugged and looked down at my hands. She didn't look so convinced.
"Come on, Gwen. Nobody is born knowing how to play chess."
"Well, maybe I was, Nix," I slyly glared at her. She sighed and shook her head.
Our days mainly went like this- Mindlessly playing chess while everything around us slowly descends into madness. Quite literally.
The sheer sheen of the white floors and walls is enough to fry anyone's cerebral cortex. You'd think you'd get used to it after a while but nope. There's always too much white.
"Sources have reported that Thor, a member of the esteemed Avengers, has recently been spotted in Surrey, England along with a mysterious sort of spaceship..."
The overhead TV pulled our attention away for a moment. Television was about the only access we had to the outside world. They always had either the news or Animal Planet on.
"Thor? That's the demigod, right?" Nix placed her head on her hand and leaned forward on the table.
"Think so," I stared boredly up at the TV. Nix had a genuine love for the Avengers for whatever reason. In my mind, all they seemed to cause was a ton of collateral damage and lots of calls to insurance companies.
"Where do you think he's been all this time?" Her eyes sparkled as she stared at the screen.
"Probably back in god land."
"Asgard." She glared at me.
The screen suddenly flashed and the image of a monkey came up.
