I really did miss driving. I missed being the one left in charge of the wheel, given I could drive a manual.
It felt good to be behind the wheel again, even if I was driving in awkward silence.
We'd been on the road for almost three hours. I wasn't going to stop until I was absolutely sure we were far from the Hydra compound. It was only then did I start to feel a nagging pain in my side.
I ignored it, assuming I'd been punched or something.
My eyes felt a little numb as I focused on the two yellow lines dividing the lanes. Bucky was silent beside me, staring out the passenger window.
I wanted to say something. Maybe thank him for helping me escape, maybe tell him I'm glad he came with me. However, I couldn't get a word out looking at his hollow expression.
I couldn't help but wonder if he was regretting this. If he was regretting helping me.
"Do you uh... do you want to listen to the radio?" I suggested, glancing from the road.
He didn't reply, only peering over at the radio console as I began pressing the "power" button.
NPR came on first and I flicked past it. I hit the skip button a few more times until I hit the 95.5 radio station.
"Load up on guns, bring your friends. It's fun to lose and to pretend..."
My face lit up, turning the song up higher.
"She's overboard and self-assured. Oh no, I know a dirty word..." I began to sing along. I saw Bucky furrow his eyebrows, perplexed by the music.
I looked over at his puzzled face, raising an eyebrow, "what? You've never heard Smells Like Teen Spirit?"
He just looked at me.
"Nirvana? Kurt Kobain?" I questioned him. He looked at me with this vacant expression. I couldn't believe what I was, well, not hearing.
"You've seriously never heard this song? It's a classic and you're like 100 years old..."
